View Full Version : Download speeds
Got a new pc the other day and wanted to install the software for my HP5510 fax/printer/scanner, only to find out that I've somehow thrown the cd away!!!!
So I went to HP's support website and started downloading the package. Its only 250mb but the best connection speed I got was between 3-4kbs!! Thats with a DSL connection of 512kbs. Is it my connection, my pc or just HP's site? What could or should I do to increase download speeds if I ever had to do that again, which will hopefully be never. Am just gonna save the software on a flashdrive. In case.

Try downloading an mp3 or zip file from another site - if the speed is the same then problems with your connection or PC.
or alternatively do an online speed test of your connection that will tell you how fast your going.
try here (http://specials.zdnet.co.uk/misc/band-test/)
Thanks JetII,
Your line speed:
102.8 Kbps
12.6 K bytes/sec
This is worse than ISDN and a lot more expensive!!!!!

I think Telewest just did...
2809.9 Kbps
344.4 K bytes/sec
Not bad, considering that I'm paying the same as I did 2 years ago for 512 kbps!
Thanks Telewest... errr.... NTL!

mmm..true, just checked -
1953 Kbps (inc. overheads)
385 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Wasn't that five days ago - there must be upgrading gradually so the first line should double still...!
Glad the upstream went up - 'twas driving me crazy with all the uploads I do to my server.

nb: still snail-pace compared to Bethere's offering of 24Mb/s (bethere co uk) :uhoh:

I just got upgraded to 10Mb broadband by Telewest, so why is my line speed apparently so high? Do I get a bigger "share" of my local bandwidth during off-peak hours or something?
Not that I'm complaining.... ;)
