Can anyone kindly give me some info on the following?

1) T/O weights for the BN2 (ex 900m rwy)
2) Actual Operating costs for the BN2

Would be greatly appreciated. This is to help me make a decision with regard putting a BN2 in service or not.
Thanks

Hi there, I can only help you with the BN2-B model, never flown the earlier type

T/O weight 2994
MAX IFR 2889
From memory the average empty weight was around 2000kg
Fuel burn around 130l/h
About 150db at t/o :p

EASY pulls max weight out of 400m

Amen. :)

900m is out of the envelope on the T/O charts isn't it? (i thought it only went as high as 500m)

Currently flying BN2A's. MTOW 2994kg MLW 2858kg. You can get a mod to bring up the MLW to 2994kg. Look closely at the engine size you are getting. The 300hp version is good if you want to climb high but for most operations the 260 hp version is fine. The bigger engines add more weight. If you are restricted to 2858kg for landing this can limit passenger loads.

You will easily get off a 900m rwy at MTOW even with a tail wind.

The BN2 is a safe easy aeroplane to fly especially if you have low hour staff. An average pilot would find them docile on one engine but I would not want to out climb anything substantial. This is the same for any light twin loaded up I suppose?

I do not know exactly what the operating costs are but do not get sucked into buying an old cheap well thrashed one. Spend the extra pingers and get yourself a newer version. It will save you in the long run.

A noise cancelling headset will keep your staff sane as well!

Many years ago in a previous life I used to operate BN2, both 260hp & 300hp models from a 600m coral strip. All at gross weight.

Consulting my old Dz one way strip book reminded me that when operating out of Naoro on the 'Jungles' run (Elev 2200. Length 450m. Slope 1.5%) that the 260HP BN2 was limited to 2500kg MTOW.
And if an engine hiccuped (or failed) just after t/o it was a case of...."oh ****!!!!!"

From memory I think Islanders I flew a few years back were operating for cost at around NZ$550-$600 per hour including fuel. Maybe try a BN2A-III-1? Now that a machine-4500kg MCTOW and less performance apart from 5 knots more TAS! Rather have a BN2 with one out.

As with Capt Claret most of my stuff was less than 700m-should piss out of 900m as long as it's not f***ing hot, wouldn't want too many hills ahead though if a donkey is coughing!
