I want to go to the RIAT at RAF Fairford this year but will be unable to get a ticket before the time-can anyone tell me if I'd still be able to get a ticket if I just turn up on the day? Or does it sell out?
Any advice on the best/quickest way to get there from LHR?
Many thanks.

Tickets are cheaper if bought in advance but I've never known a paying visitor to be turned away!

Is anything being done to sort out the traffic this year? I have been put off by the thought of being stuck in a queue for hours.

Unwell,

I've been for the last two years & the traffic management has been excellent - you'll never stop all the queues, but it's much better than in years gone by.

Also, nowadays I go by bike :ok:

....and if you had thought about it previously, you could have got on the B747 that BA put on for a day return from LHR.

I did it last year with BA, which was nice!

There may even be some slots left.... you never know!

(I won't be queuing this year either!)

Guys

Anyone bought a ticket for the "Jubillee Garden" in the past.

This is what the website says:

"Reserve your deckchair in a grassed enclosure on the crowdline and enjoy the delicious summer refreshments from the food and drink pay-bar."

Sold out for Sat, so I am assuming it's worth it. Might get some tickets for Sun. Anyone know whether it is worth it or not, and what the view is like from there ?

Just wondering if they allow visitors to fly-in in their own aircraft - say a Piper Cherokee? Great way to beat the queues!

Very possible :) :ok: :cool: :O :8 :=

The Jubilee garden is very nice, with good facilitie, but a bit on the low side for photography if you want to get photos of the a/c on the runway.

Otherwise, a great place to view the show from!

As for BA - they aren't doing flights to RIAT this year as far as I know.

No BA? That is a shame!

Coming out of FFD we departed Easterly and made 6000 feet by the threshold. Aghhh - the benefits of no bags/cargo/megatonnes of gas on our back.

Jubillee garden is nice and relaxing. Worth the money UNLESS youplan to walk up and down the flight line all day.

We are flying in on the Sunday - do wave!! :)

So any ideas on the best way to get there from LHR?

Wycombe
9th Jul 2005, 17:34
By car, if more glamorous means are not available ;)

Take the M4 West to J15 (Swindon East). The signs will take you straight into Fairford from there.

As others have said, traffic management for last 2 years has been very good (no queueing to speak of at all IIRC)

AlanM,

Very cool - how easy was it to arrange? might jump in the Cessna and head down on Saturday instead of on the bike...

Also - how much is the landing fee?

Regards

How easy is it to arrange, well start by working for a good few years doing some serious graft for RIAT, get chatting to the right people at the post show party and beg like mad!!! Eventually they may let you have a landing slot, just don't f**k up the landing otherwise there'll be a lot of annoyed punters!!!

Silenthandover,

Yu seem to know how to do it, and that it is difficult. However, AlanM's post said it was very possible.

Can anyone elaborate at all? I'll call them tomorrow to find out, I was just hoping someone might have been able to give me an answer or some guidance.

However I get there, I'm looking forward to another fantastic show!

Be advised....

On Sat/Sun, there is generally only a window of approx 1.5 hrs before and after the display to get all the visitor/charter/VIP/VVIP flights in and out, so there isn't much capacity to accommodate others who would like to fly in.

Silenthandover pretty much covered it, but you don't know if you don't ask!

Alan M must have made it onto the list as he is important ;)

Thanks Wycombe,

Will probably take the bike again this year, and maybe enquire very early for 2006.

Enjoy the show!

Be careful about taking a bike to RIAT as none will be allowed on the base, all will have to be left in secure areas in the car-parks.

I mean motorbike - Milton Keynes to RIAT in 1 hout 5mins - beats hanging around in all the traffic, and is probably faster than my 172! Parking is also just outside the main gate. Only downside is walking around in leathers on a hot day - just like Saturday is projected to be :ok:

Wonderful! It is "that" time of year again and the fun starts tomorrow. Muggins is sitting here in Lechlade, now resplendent in flashing signs warning of potential delays and that the Pope may indeed be catholic.

Glorious weather expected and for those wanting a better idea of the local traffic plan, please PM me as I may be able to save you a fair bit of time twiddling thumbs in traffic jams.

Really looking forward to it again, especially the Frecce T and the Chinook. See some of you there.

Cheers,

Conan

Cracking day today (Wed) and much already arrived. TWO separate Mirage 2000 display rehearsals and were I William Hill, I think I would close bets now for the solo jet trophy. If anyone can make Thur or Fri, they will get a very good day.

Conan please stop it!! This is my first non IAT year in 12 and you're making me miss it already.

A sad ex-earlybird.

Still on the upside I get to see a lot more of The Open!!

16th Jul 2005, 08:59
SH - RIAT will miss you buddy.

You could always pop up to LCY and see the fun day there. Saturday from 1400hrs.

As said, the difficulty is getting a slot for the runway prior to the display starting (and a departure post show!)

Made my first ever RIAT visit today with family. Teriffic day out, if a bit hot :) .

Hightlights:

Will Curtis in the Sukhoi 26. Mrs KCDW couldn't watch the inverted ribbon cutting. Scary stuff. They had him chatting away to the commentator while he was doing his thing, like it was a tea party, no hint of a man taking multiple Gs at the same time. Didn't seem real.

Both F16 displays. Better to watch than the Eurofighter IMHO.

The Apache looping amidst flares.

The Chinook. The pilot slung it around like it was a Gazelle. Absolutely fantastic.

The Spanish Airforce display team. Not as dramatic as the Red Arrows, but the finale with the Spanish colours was moving.

The Red Arrows flyby with the 3 Spits.

Well worth the 3 hour each way drive, and well organised too.

Nick! Fabulous! Breathtaking shots.

Now! What did you do to the B1?

The Frecce shot is a beaut. Perfect timing.

Congratulats Nick and look forward to some more.

Oh! What happened to the other Red?

Not a lot just shot it with a polarising filter and cropped (a lot as he was over Bristol by then!)

Great photos, like the "yellow bird" with the trailing one in the background.

Thought the Spanish Team looked tighter than I have ever seen them.

What a pity that B1 crews only know how to fly fast and straight

:( - I expect they all drive American "sports" cars

Awards: "Frecce" is excellent! (deserve the award). But the "Reds" are best. (Followed them since 1966.)
