Heard a great rumour yesterday, and seeing as though this is a RUMOUR network, I thought i'd pass it on.

Apparently more Sea King Mk6's are being converted to 6 CR state, and a new Junglie squadron will be formed (re-formed?) in the near future. SERCO have the contract already, so I hear...

Perhaps JHC have found a role for 847 after all...

No doubt a total load of c**p, but no worse than most of the threads on this site.

Any thoughts?

wow,...it does sound too good to be true. Will that be an entire sqdn of Mk6 CR ?

Don't be so cynical, It could actualy make some sense, Get rid of puma and replace with Sea kings - Common Airframes? Better A/C for deck ops? How many of these are in storage anyway????

As people will have seen in various magazines the MK 6 CR has proven itself to be a very capable helicopter. The things that it does miss (DAS and some more seats for example) could easily be read across from the Mk 4 if they were required.

As for the future - there are thoughts out there, but that is all. It could easily fill in for Puma until we have a SK4 / Puma replacement - which would mean no extra Junglie Sqn, but an RAF MK 6 CR Squadron.

However IMHO the RAF will not find the potential loss of Puma too attractive and therefore (in line with Jungly) logic, cost effectiveness and capabilty will not win through.

Jungly Spanner Monkey...

Obviously you are in a far higher position than a mere mortal like myself, and privvy to a greater depth of information, but, as I said it is only a rumour...

Sounds like good old common sense to me...but wait, Mil procurement and old common dog...they rarely appear in the same contract from where we 'mere' mortals sit. More money for Disgusta Wastelands; they can sell us more of the spares we gave them for the mighty King.

ps looking forward to attending the bonfire celebrations when they get rid of the 'Plastic Pig' ..........Gawd Bless 'er

How do the Puma and the SK4/6 compare?

Presumably both now have similarly decent Nav fits, chaff/flare/MAWS etc. so it's a matter of payload/range/performance?

One would guess that SK carries more internally, perhaps a little further, but presumably rather more slowly, and with less agility? Presumably it can't carry such long loads (spare blades)?

How about underslung?

How about rapid emplaning and deplaning, fast roping, etc.?

Admittedly top speed is not the SK4's strongest point, but in terms of endurance it trounces the Puma. For flexibilty you need to ask the RM or Army, but I imagine comments would be positive!!

With the new mod 1T engines it even has a reasonable hot/high capability. A fully modded AUP SK4, with DIRCM, is arguably the best protected battlefield helicopter in the JHC inventory.

Hello Jackonicko,

There are some that would find a Puma, the Mighty King and comparison in the same sentence humerous to say the least.

Imagine a Fiat Cinquecento (Sport Model to be fair....plus vidal saloon styling kit and oodles of hairspray!) next to the A-Team van. What would you want to be supported by?
