Hey people.

Thought it would be most relevant in this forum, anyone got any detailed info for the role of the RAF Assistant? Or even the role of and MOD assistant. I have a rough idea, however would be interested in what duties/tasks they can be expected to do in the tower just to confirm what little i know already.

Feel free to e-mail or PM me.

Cheers,

topjet

Topjet, assuming that you're asking for info on RAF ATC assistants, suggest you start a thread in the ATC forum as well.

Also, why not ring up your nearest flying station and arrange a visit (Get the number from the Armed Forces Careers Office). Most places are more than willing to show you around.

Hi Topjet,
If you've not already done so, have a look here:

Also Aerospace Systems Operator. Their many duties include assisting fighter controllers as well as moving on to operate digital data links, tactical radars and other AirC2 equipment for themselves. As with ATC assistants, there is the chance to become controllers; but, unlike the other 2 trades highlighted above, you could also get to fly on the E-3D as a controller or as a surveillance operator (sgt rank and beyond). The ratio of non-commissioned to officers will increase in most operational environments over the next 10 years.

Thanks for the swift reply chaps.

Was mainly the role of the MOD assistant, do they do things differently to the regulars or they do things the same with same responsibility etc.

Just wondering what a typical day would be.

Where civilians are employed in an ATC tower they generally undertake the same duties as the blue suiters. They hold either civil servant grade E1 or E2. the E2 man the Visual Control Room, Duty driver, Switchboard Operator. The E1 is a Cpl equivelant so they undertake runway control duties and watch I/c duties in addition. Out of interest they also have civil servant AVO's who undertake contolling duties.
