Am still very interested to know how many people Easterns have on their books at the moment and when/if the first “self funded” course goes ahead? Will they simply employ cadets to get the ball rolling?

The following extract from the QF website makes interesting reading. The cadets not only pay for their whole training, but are then required to pay for their own endorsement. Talk about buying a job!

What costs will I incur as part of the Cadet Industry Placement Program (CIPP)?

Qantas will provide air travel to and from the Cadet's place of residence and their place of employment under the CIPP at the start and end of the period of employment. All other relocation expenses will be the Cadet's own responsibility.

The Cadet will also be required to pay an up-front contribution of approximately A$10,000 towards the initial aircraft endorsement or other required qualification. This payment can be funded through a Qantas Staff Credit Union (QSCU) line of credit. This payment is required to help offset the costs associated with the Cadet's initial endorsement and also ensures the CIPP employer is not disadvantaged in the event that any additional training above the norm is required due to the Cadet's lower experience level.

Whilst on the cadet topic, it’s an interesting dynamic that regional captains that would almost certainly have applied to Qantas unsuccessfully in the past, are now required to babysit these people.

Surely the cadets would be better off in GA for 2 years flying a C210/310 if they need stick and rudder time?

I am also interested to know what drives companies like Airnorth and Skippers to hire cadets? Is it simly a measure employed to stop high turnover of staff, or are there other benefits? Airnorth came under QF’s umbrella coinciding with cadet placements from memory, was this part of a deal?

Why would the regional captains be "babysitting" them? Are you saying that an ex-cadet is incapable of being an effective first officer?

Who paid for your training, crystalball, if you didn't?
