On Tuesday, I was in my car with my girlfriend, and she said, "Why's that plane doing that?" I looked in the sky and could see a plane and it's vapour trail doing a circle in the sky. I said that the pilot's were probably lost and were just having a look around. She knew I was joking.

Five minutes later, another aircraft did the same thing. I was stuck in some temporary traffic lights, so I saw it do a turning circle and then continue on it's merry way. Then so did another.
Due to the vapour trails, they must have been in high altitude alirways?

I was to the north of Leeds at the time, at about 10am. The plane's could've been anywhere in the Northern region I suppose. So what was happening? Was it spacing becasue of a particulary busy time. That's what I told my better half.

Cheers, just curious

After reading Jer's comment, I had a look through my old bookmarks on IE, and found this. Made me laugh all over again!

Watch out for those all-black, UN helicopters!

Thanks for that Gonze :ok:

Oh how I laugh.

(Maybe it's the chemicals?)

They could have been going around one of the round-abouts in the airways ( i think theres a couple North of Leeds ). Uk aeroplanes turn left at these round-abouts, USA/ European make right turns.

I think Pprune Radar's reply is the correct one.

Pole Hill is the main turning point that way!

If they were white circles with a hole in the middle, it would have been Polo Hill.

The cons were persistent that day. I saw the jet arrive on station as I took off early that morning. He was still there when I came back some hour and a half later, all his neat little circles still there. Impressive stuff but not too tactically sound.

I saw it too, curiosity beat me so rang Air Traffic at MME. It was a USAF KC135 doing air to air re-fuelling training.

Unlikely to be AR. Frowned upon overland in the UK. Certainly no overland AR track just north of Leeds, I think the only overland one is in Scotland.
