Hi there,

Expecting a move to HK later this year and have been doing a little research in the meantime. Like the look of Happy Valley to live and have a couple of questions regarding playing both field and ice hockey.

Checked out both Valley RFC and HKFC online for field hockey - HKFC looks amazing, but what are the fees for a Full (Sports Preferred) Membership? More importantly, what about the social aspect of each club?

Also, I'm a novice ice hockey player hoping to join a less-than-full-body-contact team/league in HK - any recommendations? Where is the skating rink, and is it easy to get to by MTR/tram?

Cheers,
TM

As I understand it (second hand from someone who went through this recently), for HKFC the joining fee for a playing member is HK$20,000 (but you need to have a trial and convince them that you are a) good enough, and b) committed enough). The monthly membership fee is then HK$1200 and there is an additional monthly minimum spend requirement of HK$1200.

It's easy to justify that if you have kids and plan to spend a lot of time using the club facilities, but if you are single and just want a game of hockey then you might find that the delights of Wanchai keep you there such that you can't really get your $2400 a month's worth.

Triangle, there is also Valley RFC which has a good hockey (feild) program, do a search under Valley RFC and follow the links to hockey. As Christep said, with HKFC, there is a large annual fee to pay to play, a minimum spend at the bar, and lots of other places to spend your excess cash;)

As for the Ice Hockey, there is a league that runs over winter, they play at the Dragon Centre in Sham Shui Po, and there is a stop on the redline of the MTR, and about a 3 minute walk to the rink. There are 3 divisions that cater to all levels of abilities. Dont have the website available, but look under Hong Kong Ice Hockey and you should find it ok. I'll try to find it and pm you with the address.

Thanks for the info. Have had a look at Valley RFC - looks very sociall. Anyone know what a standard gym membership is worth? Eg. one in Happy Valley, or the one just off the escalator?
