Friends of mine have never been up in an aeroplane. Thought I would take them for a flip around the bay in a 172. They have offered to pay for the petrol so to speak. Every little helps to defray costs, of course. Can I do this trip legally or does their offer of petrol money turn the flight into a charter flight - which in this case the flying school that own the Cessna does not have a charter licence.

If you're a PPL its legal provided you evenly share the cost of the flight between all occupants onboard.

Have a good flight

:D

Just 'borrow' some of their money to pay for your share... ;)
