Is it possible to be based (initially) in HKG as DEFO freighter? Or do you have to be hired as SO to live there as your first assignment?

Initialy you will be required to do about 5 months in HKG and there are no DEFO freight positions in HKG. (that's what i have been told) only SO(pax).

thank you for playing, but no cigar, actually you CAN get what is called a "Hong Kong Based Roster" on the freighter..............you retain your official base and pay scale but get rostered out of Hong Kong, don't get any housing allowance but quite a few guys live in Phillipines or Thailand and commute to Hong Kong.Company provides Hotac whilst you are in HKG.....................

OK !!!

Tamalai you are generally, in your posts, not completely correct. The company only pays allowances and hotel in Hong Kong during duty periods. I would try to seek out a few people on the Hong Kong based roster to get the pitfalls clearly explained. You will find most are not happy with it at all. The 're-treads' who have joined the freighter fleet and own accommodation in Hong Kong being the exceptions. There are no basings for freighter pilots in Hong Kong apart from t'management.
