View Full Version : Another Wireless Network Problem

I’m new to broadband and have set up a wireless network using a Netgear DG834GT ADSL Router and a Netgear WG111T USB Wireless adapter with WEP encryption. My Acer laptop (running XP Home with SP2) had wireless pre-installed. The WG111T is plugged into my main PC (running XP Pro with SP2) and the DG834GT is plugged in to power and telephone lines in a room midway between them.

Signal strengths are good and the laptop performs without fault. The PC works fine whilst it is being used but if it is left for 15 minutes or so then it loses its connection. The WG111T power light is still on as it should be. The laptop still keeps its connection so the DG834GT is working at all times.

I don’t have standby, disk shutdown, or hibernate selected on the PC, just the monitor is selected to turn off after 15 minutes. All options I use to restart the connection fail to work and I have to shut down the PC to sort it out. In this situation the PC will not shut down on its own and I have to press the reset button. If I shut down the computer whilst the wireless connection is working then shutdown happens as it should – no need to use the reset button.

When the PC reboots, the wireless connection opens automatically and stays connected as long as I am working at the PC.

Any ideas gratefully received……….sod it – the wireless connection has just failed whilst I’m writing this so it is just 10 minutes or so of inactivity on the net which causes it, nothing to do with the screen turning off after 15 minutes. Must be something to do with this USB wireless adapter, but what? I have checked I have the latest drivers.

The first thing I would try would be to see whether there are updated versions of the driver software on Netgear's website, both for the wireless adapter and the router. I've had not dissimilar problems in the past with my Netgear setup (DG834G and WG511T).

I have the latest drivers installed - but this morning I found the Netgear forums and it seems just about everyone has similar problems with Netgear equipment - and no-one has a solution.

Telephone support is from India and consists of someone reading off a checklist rather than listening to what you say - I think I have more knowledge than the support guys.
