G'day

Need to get head back in books.... :sad: :{

Started the old ATPL's 4years ago and got 3 done self study but lost motivation.

Does anybody know anywhere in NZ that I can enrol just for the 4 req'd,

Law
Advanced Syst & Perf
Nav
Flight Planning

Or do I screw the nut and self study the buggers - the old grey matter is getting just exactly that...OLD!!!.... & GREY!!!

And yes I do know about the TTRMA option but that would mean studying all bleedin' seven of them.

Cheers Ta

Id try and avoid self studying flight planning if at all possible. :\

Unless there is a few of you down down there wanting to do the subject your best bet would be to make a trip up to Auckland.

Pete Sumner from nsn does nav and flight planning from time to time which is well worth the money.

A guy called Landon used to do Ins & Nav Aids and Systems but im not sure if he does anymore.

They had a website www.atplsolutions.co.nz but again im not sure if its still there.

Let me know if u want me to dig out the contact details (someone else may know them off hand?).

GW,

Law is a easy self study subject, Parts 61, 67, 73 (?), 91, 121 125 are the basic parts of the exam. Some (5?) q's from AIP Approach plates finish it up.

Have been in touch with Pete Sumner mysef recently. Just ran a ATPL Flt Pln course last weekend, he may be looking at a Nav course mid-late May depending on his work committments and interest.

I'm self studying Syst & perf now and find it all right. I'm looking at doing Pete's Nav course if it gets off the ground.

Anyone interested in Pete's course can PM me and if we secure enough confirmed interest we can try and get Pete to make himself avail.

Cheers

Cheers Guys

Tried that Web address and in a few other guises, also tried a google search, all with no joy.

I could drum up quite a few participants for a course I reckon, so contact details would be great. Post the details here to see if we've got a following on this score unless you want to keep numbers down then PM me. Ta Sqwark.

I hear what you're saying about self study, did a couple back when the memory of the CPL & IF theory was fresh but it sucks - I passed them and can quite candidly say that it was definitely good luck not good study technique that did it

Fly_by_kiwi..... I know I know you and I know you know me (being a bit recognisable!!!) but I've never quite pinpointed you to the individual. One of these days I'll figure it out, hopefully over a beer!!!

Anyway cuz... bro... aa's is back up norff now ehh!!

Later

GW

PS - It used to be recommended that you did Flight Planning and the Nav at the same time is that still so?

I personally did Petes Nav and FP course one after the other and found it alot better as most of the exercises apply to both subjects. Also Pete cuts out all the Bullsh$t that you don't need to study.

As far as Law goes have a look at the stoneybrooke training notes (not sure if spelling is correct) you will only need about a week study with these notes. Navaids and systems can all be self studied if you have the time, money and connections to get good notes. With Met just get your hands on Trevor Thoms CPL/ATPL met book and that will see you rite.

Good luck with the study

Im looking at doing the TTMRA action via self study for the most of it. Though i am going to the Flight Planning Course at AFT on the sunshine coast at this stage. That course is about $1000 which includes the exam at the end.

I am guessing flight planning is flight planning around the world and the NZ version of the course cant be too far off the mark.

What charges does he ask for his course? Has anyone done the NZ course and sat the Aussie test?

Cheers.

I think its about $240 for the two weekends. Havnt done the aussie exam myself tho.
Although flight planning is flight planning around the world I imagine the exam structure would be like apples to pears.
As you can see from any of the ASL vent posts the content isnt overly difficult but as far as interpreting the asl side of things.......
Id personally just do the exams in whichever country you see yourself doing the ATPL flight test in as you wont be able to cross credit the theory subjects themselves.

With over 200 readers of this post it would appear that there may be a market for an enthusiastic fellow to offer a course.

We require to sit an ATPL flight test and yet there isn't even a theory training provider.... unless you count one or two big flying schools like Massey... and I don't, how crazy is that.

Lets all get Oz ATPL's and sod ASL... they get way too much of our money as it is!!!!

if you're looking at the aussie ATPL issue followed by paper chasing the NZ one, then hurry up fellas.

NZCAA is looking at trying to close that "loophole" (their words)

they also reckon CASA is looking at introducing a ATPL flight test.

could be scare mongering, the CAA guy rarely was a friendly chap ....as always, grain of salt stuff.

either way, best not dilly-dally.

Depending on what airline you want to fly for you weill need to do all the subjects even if you can get credits (by belonging to another organsisation that dont need licences! ;) ). Thus the money requireed to do all the NZ ATPL subjects and a flight test is way more than flying three times to aussie + accom + exam costs. Since there is no aussie ATPL flight test then it makes it way cheaper and easier!

On their website they are trying to instigate an ATPL flight test for their ATPL however it looks like it will be at the end of 06/07. Never the less it is happening, get your cpl cross credited now and get an ARN at least you can then prove intent if they change the system quick time.

I would have to agree there seem to be a handful and a half of aussie ATPL flight schools and not one here (not one creditable - I got my ATPL at Massey, Yeah right), guess us kiwis are smarter and can self study!?!!?

So back to the books...

So is that it??

Pete who does a couple of the subjects.... ATPLsolutions whose website is now dead.... PPSC who seem to have disappeared of the face of NZ, and lastly, self study a selection of books that may or may not be applicable to the random needs of ASL and there board of assessors.

Hmmm me's thinks the Oz option is looking better all the time, surely this is wrong?

Was discussing this the other day with colleagues, one of whom said that the Aussies were going to intro a ATPL flight test due to international pressure from presumably ICAO member states or ICAO themselves, who don't regard the Aussie ATPL very highly.

Besides, no airline in their right mind is going to let you loose as PIC on a RPT flight without doing a demanding check to line which would double as a ATPL flight test anyway, so no use thinking that getting your OZ ATPL and converting to NZ or whatever is going to cut you any corners anywhere except in the wallet for the initial issue.

True, but you are going to do a line check anyway as part of your conversion to type so it doesnt really matter whether Aussie asks for one or not.

I'd be keen on a Flight Planning/Nav course. PPSC notes aren't the best.

Hey Raro,

Don't know of any e-mail address. I just grabbed the info out of the Met book I have at home.
Just give Walter a bell on the phone, he's really easy to talk to and will help you out with whatever you need.

Goodluck.

Self study of ATPL Law is the easiest way but you really do need to know where to look. The rules are not the only reference posted !

I do publish a set of notes with 9 sample papers that are constantly being updated.

if you are interested

e mail [email protected]

Also I highly reccomend Mr Sumner's two courses in Nav and Flt Planning.

Like i said before i would highly recommed the above notes!

They are very well put together with lots of exams and with just a small amount of study will get you through ATPL Law with no problems
