G'day Ppruners

This may have been done in the past. Could not find anything on it.

Can anyone shed light whose been through it recently what the Stage 3 Sim ride consists of?

How long was it for?
What approaches?
What did you do to prepare for it?

I've contacted Ansett Simulators in melbourne to find out how much. They're asking for $920/hr inc instructor on B767-200 sim.

How many have been down that path? Would you recommend it?

You can also call QF simulators. They're more than happy for you to hire the sim. Get hold of them via the switch on (02) 9691-3636. They'll let you do whatever sequences you want. They won't tell you what the selection sequences are but if you know them already..... :D

You dont need the motion in the sim, without motion you can still get used to the attitudes, sounds, lights etc. The visual cues in the windows were quite fooling at times and made me feel I was moving anyway. So that will save you a lot on sim costs. The motion will not give you the edge you are looking for. Remember, big Q are looking for a basic but fast scan, high level of orientation and good instrument flying skills which they can build on. They are not looking for a 76 driver.

PS- Wait a few days and you will get all the info about the approaches you need to shoot etc. The rest of it is steep turns, and climbing and descending turns, a hold entry, thats about it, from memory.

Thanks for the replies :D

I got the two approaches today in the post. It's the Melbourne Rwy 16 ILS and the Rwy 16 Twin locator.... I've never used Jepps before and it doesn't seem to hard to decipher it. But the quality of the plates are not that great.

I like the idea of not using motion, thanks for that... Might call Qantas Sim as well to see if I can save the trip to Mexico.

The QF Sim;

Max Power, maintain runway heading, rotate at 120kts, climb at 140kts, then 160, then 180kts, level off at 4000. Medium turns left and right, climb to 6000 at 180kts and 1000ft per minute. Descend at flight idle and 180kts and 1000ft per minute turn onto another heading. Make some NDB intercepts to Bolinda, sector entry (1or 2) fly Twin Loc to minima, missed approach. Then get vectored for ILS, land – game over. 40 mins

If you are a GA piston driver and do the ANSETT sim, PLEASE make sure you do it with motion on. The sky pointing AI will confuse the hell out of you otherwise, and the extra sensory input helps a lot even though you are on the clocks. You are prob better off spending the money on a generic training on getting you “scan up” by climbing/descending turns onto headings.

QF “derate” the sim with a “chock” to limit EPR. This has the effect of making the sim fly not quite like a “jet” or a “piston twin” but a bit of an unusual hybrid. You will prob find the ailerons “super-sensitive” and you cannot “flick” the controls if you rollout a few degrees off HDG or the thing will buffet, and you will come off looking like a hack.

They expect you to fly the attitudes and power settings correctly. Plus or minus .01 EPR is not accepted. However, make sure you still “fly” the sim and don’t try and “operate” it. If you are not at the right speed, fix it, then, reset the power/attitude.

The charts they give you are too big for holder on the yoke and you will need to take scissors or fold then to fit, they are quite happy for you to use your own normal sized ones. Write power setting on the charts, highlight minima’s etc This is accepted.

If you are in a group, they will generally go most experienced to least.

The most important thing is to listen to the tips the instructor gives you when you are flying. Show you can improve from his advice and you will be halfway there. Expect some criticism of your flying, and some questions like “are you are related to anyone in QF”. The Sim testing officer will be scoring your “ride” as you go on an A4 sheet. You will receive no feedback on your performance. Try to keep stress levels to a min and fly accurately, its really just another hoop to jump through.
