After another mind numbing session of sitting in the tea bar, I decided to crack open the latest edition of SRO's. Contained in the said document was a notice asking for interested personnel to apply for NCA asap.
So firstly is the RAF really desperate to recruite new NCA's, and secondly how long is this requirement likley to last?

Yes we are short
All recruted as Wis Ops now then after successful completion of initial training then streamed to either
Eng - I dont think they need many now but perhaps one could let you know
AEop - I think they are just about on strength
ALM - About 8% undermanned but suffering badly on the helicopter fleet
Air Sig - Very specialised and I dont know a lot about them. Maybe one of them could chip in and give you the gen.
The training machine takes time so we will be short for the next few years. Hope that helps.

Air Eng streaming is no more.

I seem to recall that the streaming is now:

WSOp (crewman) either rotary or fixed wing
WSOp (EW)
WSOP (Accoustics)
WSOp (Linguist) - specialist entry requirements

Streaming occurs after ITC and basic WSOp training (24 weeks at Cranwell?) and takes into account OASC apptitude scores and personal choice, as well as Service needs.

Try the NCA presentation team, they will have up to date (and accurate) details.

I believe that about 70% are streamed rotary crewman, although the new career path is designed to allow cross fertilisation.

Go on. Give it a go!

Give me a shout (PM me) if you want to have a visit to see the Nimrod. I will be having a chat with the OASC dudes about what they are looking for in the selection process as we have sent some top blokes down over the last year, but they have failed the selection. Despite the re-org up at Kinloss and the fact that we may be overborn for a while, we still need to recruit WSOps(....which is why the FRI is still running). Don't worry about the likes of the omni-present BEagle...there's more to Nimrods than just flying over the sea eating cakes.......we've got curry too;)

Go for it and good luck

Kippermate and Dave Allen are obviously more up to date than me with the latest gen on the NCA school. I went through it a long time ago at Finningley and then went back as an instructor there so I am a little out of touch.
I echo Yeller-Gate as well.
If you have the basic qualifications and don’t do anything you will always be sitting around the crewroom thinking what if?
I will also put a rider with that and I hope the others will agree with me- If you have the qualifications why not shoot for the top? Go for pilot. I quote from many other more learned people than I in these forums.

No stick No vote
The aim of the RAF (or AAC or FAA) is to fly the mission.
The aim of those who don’t is to support those who do.

The only people who can stop you being a pilot are those at OASC Cranwell. If you don’t have the aptitude, and not everyone has, then use NCA as a fall back. It’s a bloody good fall back too. I was never good enough for pilot but I’ve still had a great time in the last 30 odd years. Contact the recruiting people and get all the gen you can.

Think of the crewroom and remember WHAT IF??? I wish you every success with your quest

There is a certain female flight eng that runs the recruitment team, who would be more than happy to have a chat over the details reference NCA. They are still very much actively recruiting.

SACR - To answer your Qs: No we are not desperate to recruit.... but always casting the net for suitable applicants. We will have a requirment for NCA as long as we have Multi Crew Aircraft.

Having once been in a similar position as yourself (JT Engine Basher - at Lossiemouth)........ just go for it!! Having the self-belief to take that first step is your responsibility. As you can detect from other posts the vast majority of us enjoy the variety of jobs that are a part of NCA and more than willing to asist in your application. Once you have contacted DA, PM me for more info about selection, NCA Trg (Initial & Generic) & a visit to RAFC Cranwell to see what you are letting yourself in for! To quote

As for me........If confusion is the first step to knowledge, I must be a genius. (Larry Leissner) ......... somehow fits better!!

Good luck in your journey.
