as a flying rozzer i often wonder what it would be like to fly in a fast jet, our beast despite being the most technical piece of kit in the police world can only manage 140kts !

ideally i would love someone to pm me with a direct invitation, although realising that demand for this way outstips supply. if there are no offers then perhaps some of you kind folk would be able to point me in the right direction, who to ring, names, phone numbers etc.

i would be able to offer a return visit in our beast should you ever feel the need to go slow. seriously though, previous passengers from your field have found it most enjoyable.

if it makes a difference then i could always throw in the flight safety angle?

years ago, i did chipmunks, bulldogs, etc but would love to get above that 400knts mark.

(could anyone pm me the name/no of the oc ops at valley or leeming)


P.S. NO i dont issue speeding fines so there is no need to hate me!

If you're anywhere near Leeming, I would write to OC Ops Wing [ring the station get his name - the personal touch] and ask to set up a liaison between one of the Sqns and your unit. Since you generally fly LL you are an uncontrolled hazard to fast jet aviation [and I mean that in the nicest possible way! Flt safety-wise].

You can then visit them and give presentations on your job, the problems you face, etc, etc. They will give you chapter and verse from their point of view. Then after a few happy hours, possible flying in to give them a look at your machine, you invite them to your base, tea, coffee, beer, BBQ, etc and a flight or 2.

Then [hopefully, if they are bona mates] they will reciprocate and give you a back seat ride.

Liaison, beer and flying all round...

I did that for my local Fed helio, supplied them with LL maps, kept the Harrier, Jag and Tonka mates informed and got a ride in the helio. Good fun... [unfortunately, being on a ground tour, I couldn't offer a Harrier ride].

many thanks to the guys who have replied so far.

two points if u dont mind me mentioning,

1, on a police officers salary, paying for my seat is not really viable.

2, would love to fly with the reds (doesn't everyone) but im more interested in the low level valleys kind of stuff, due to the possible conflicts that we may have with our machine, u know the flight safety kinda stuff.

without going into too much detail on a public forum option 2 is quite a relevant point.

as above thanks for the response so far, would love to hear some more offers/suggestions, and i have the jump seat ready in our machine for those who are insane or curious enough to try it.

There is a unit at Leeming which flies at 400kts+ all the time & has more than a couple of spare backseats...

And it doesn't fly the F3 (should be enough clues in there)?

But if were me I'd try the OC Ops suggestion as mentioned in another replies!

Actually, FM has a very valid point - I'd forgotten about 100 Sqn at Leeming. They regularly waz around at warp factor omigod at holysh*t feet agl. They might well be worth a try [but I advise thru OC Ops].

The LL flight safety angle is definitely the way I would go. I got to know quite a bit about your ops and the problems you face daily [or nightly]. Liaison with the FJ LL guys is the way ahead IMHO.

Valley probably won't bear much fruit - their flying hours are probably very tight. But it might be worth a call to OC Ops [or whatever he is called there - anybody familiar with the Valley setup?] - if you don't ask...

You could always contact JFACTSU (http://www.raf.mod.uk/jfactsu/contact.html) (Joint Forward Air Control Training and Standards Unit) at Leeming.

As a student you get to experience the FJ perspective, so they are used to having 'non jet jocks' occupying the back seat. I guess they utilise 100 Squadron (http://www.raf.mod.uk/squadrons/h100.html) .

I think the post that disappeared was a particularly nasty snipe at the police. Glad it's gone - totally uncalled-for. The police have a difficult enough job at the best of times without some moron taking potshots at them[not really bothered who removed it].

thanks for the support re the deleted post.

i didnt get the oppurtunity to read it but i can guess what its contents were.

all i can say is that the majority of cops i know are good eggs and will do almost anything to help. the things we do will not be popular with all, and there are as with any large establishment some bad eggs.

and yes i too hate speed cameras.


to get back on the thread's topic, i am slowly chipping away and seem to be making some progress. many thanks to those who have made suggestions, but please keep the tips and pointers coming, i wont rest till i have been over that 300kts barrier lol
