View Full Version : How do I (permanently) delete registry entries

Having recently joined the forum and having read the various postings about hijack I downloaded hijackthis and was amazed to see how much rubbish there was.

I have got rid of most of it but there are a number of entries which will not go away.

If I fix them with hijack this and rescan they go away but on reeboot they all come back - minus the actual descriptions - leaving an entry such as {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6}

Looking at the registry I find the entry in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in the sub directory WinCtlAdx.Installer.

I have tried deleting that entry from the registry which seems to work but again on reeboot it returns.

All together I have 14 similar items that I would like to get rid of.

Can anyone tell me how to do it please?

It may be that you need to run HJT in safe mode? I had a stubborn 'hijack' this am which would not let go until I ran it thus.

Hi G7SWz,

Please download 'Hijack This!' from here (http://thespykiller.co.uk/hjttut.htm), unzip, and place it in it’s own folder, (not in the temp folder, or on the desktop) doubleclick HijackThis.exe, check for updates by clicking on Config | Misc. Tools | Check for Updates and follow the prompts. Once updated click on Scan. When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply.

This will give us a rundown of what’s going on in your PC. One of us here will be glad to analyse it for you. Don’t fix anything yourself yet, as a lot of the stuff on that list will be harmless or required.

Cheers

Liam

Hi John,

Please run a new HJT! Scan, and check to fix the following entries, being sure to double check that you haven't missed any. Next, close all browser windows and click the Fix checked button…

You'll notice that I've marked out three btintra entries in red. If these are a part of your works intranet, then they're fine, otherwise fix them. They aren't a WWW URL.. that's why I've picked up on them.. :ok: :)

Then could you please do a Find for the folder (or any files also, as it could be part of a freebie game) winctlad, and also a file search for admilliserv and admillikeep.

Let me know how you get on.

Cheers

Liam

Hi Liam

Thanks for your response - however I am afraid having done what you suggested the problem still remains.

I ran HJT - fixed the checked items as you suggested and searched for the files and folders none of which were present.

On rebooting the computer and rescanning with HJT all of the items 016 which you marked are still there.

I also asked it to delete a few more 016 items that I do not use which were a Zonelabs download, QuickTime install and two links to web cams that I have only looked at once in the distant past - those 4 items are still there as well.

The following is the relevant section of the latest scan

Have you any other ideas?

Liam

Do not bother looking further into my query - I have solved it.

The problem was that because I had Spy-Bot TeaTimer running it was blocking changes to the registry and neither Hijack this nor the Microsoft Spyware program could delete the problem entries.

Once I uninstalled SpyBot and ran them again the problem cleared and my computer now appears to be spyware free.

Hi John,

Of course, I'd completely forgotten about TeaTimer. I've got mine set to alert me with any changes, and I either click yes or no, depending on what I happen to be doing. A must if you download stuff. :)

Cheers

Liam
