Safety and security in PNG

Can anyone in the highlands of PNG comment on security issues there. It's been a few years since I've been in Hagen or Goroka and it wasn't brilliant then. At least there weren't any serious weapons around then. I understand that is changing though.

I did hear they local gangs in Mendi are walking around armed in full view of the cops.
Armed means shooty bang bangs not tomahawks and bow n arras like the olden daze.
You probably wouldnt need to be mad to go there but it would help.
