Also, I ran SPybot and there were half a dozen entries, along the lines of "CoolWWW..." that simply would not delete. I also tried running CWShredder but it kept crashing. Do these things fight back!

Thanks in advance

In the absence of any gurus maybe have a look at this site for some clues.

Hi Aiglon,

Sorry, but there have been a few logs posted in the last day or so, and I'm getting around to them all as quickly as I can, but for the moment I'm off out. I'll check your log on my return..

Cheers

Liam

Wow! It's major all right. Let me print your log and I'll get back to you. I see at least 30 or so off the top.!

Yes, these things do fight back. They flood your system with tons of traces, so as soon as they are removed, they reinstall from somewhere else!

At first glance:

Remove:

Hotkey commands:

R1-HKCU-www.websearch
there are three of these
R1-HKCU-http:/netsearchsoft
two of these
R0-toolbar dll
one of these

R3- URL search hook
also remove all subsequent 01-Hosts about 41 of these

all 02\'s BHO\'s these are browser helper objects

03 toolbar dll

04- Wild tangent remove this anywhere you see it

016 DPF- wild tangent
DPF-odysseusmarketing.com
DPF-/WildAppNonUS.Cab

018 toolbar

Also check:

My computer
C; -or whatever your hard drive is
program files

anything that says wild tangent, new dot net right click and delete.

I\'m sure I may have missed a couple. Do these, run a new scan, and report back if you can. Good Luck

Hi Aiglon,

Here at last, and what a mess :)

Definitely worth printing these off first.. :)

The first thing you need to do, is to place Hijack This in it’s own folder (e.g. C:\HJT\….) so it can generate backup files to the same folder; needed should an entry be accidentally deleted. Then please run a new HJT! Scan, and check to fix the following entries, being sure to double check that you haven't missed any. Next, close all browser windows and click the Fix checked button…

Then boot into safe mode, (see here (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406) for info if needed) and delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\Temp folder, but not the folder itself. Next please find and delete the following bolded files...

c:\windows\180ax.exe

C:\documents and settings\ciaran\local settings\temp\Z8M9Qq.exe

C:\windows\system32\kalvpyk32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\SexMovie.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\n20050308.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmc.exe

w3skscin.exe (Probably in the C:\Windows\System32 folder, but may have to search for it)

..and the following folders...

C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools

C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar

C:\Program Files\VBouncer

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools (The same as the above WinTools folder, but you may find an instance of both)

Then please boot back into normal mode and download AdAware SE from here (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/).

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Now install the VX2 cleaner. These (http://russelltexas.com/malware/adawarese/vx2plugin.htm) are the instructions for doing this. Apologies, but I haven't written out my own ones yet.. time is money an' all.. :)

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
· Automatically save log-file
· Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
· Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
· Scan Within Archives
· Scan Active Processes
· Scan Registry
· Deep Scan Registry
· Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
· Scan my Hosts file

· Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
· All of your hard drives | Proceed

3. Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
· Include additional process information
· Include additional file information
· Include environment information

4. Click the Tweak button and select:
· Under the Scanning Engine:
· Unload recognized processes & modules during scan
· Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
· Under the Cleaning Engine:
· Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

5. Click on Proceed to save the settings.

6. Click Start and on the next screen choose:
· Use Custom Scanning Options

7. Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Next, please reboot again and download Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 from here (http://security.kolla.de): if you haven't already got the program.

Click on Updates | Download Updates, and follow the prompts.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, and click Check for Problems. Once the scan is complete, have SpyBot remove all it finds marked in RED.

Next, download and run CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/). If you have certain cookies you want to retain, then click on the Options button before running, and move across the ones that you want to keep...

Next reboot and go here (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp), and run the online virus scan; choosing the Autoclean option just before clicking the Scan button. Then please post a new log for a final once over.

Next, please reboot and post a new log for a final once over.

Cheers

E-Liam,

Thanks. Just going through your instructions now on the affected machine. Quick question - the Windows/Temp folder has a whole load of sub-folders in it - do I simply delete the contents of each of these or delete the sub-folders themselves?

Hi Aiglon,

Don't worry about that.. I now ask everyone to download CCleaner ( as you will see later on in the post) It does all that automatically. I just haven't got around to changing my C&Ps yet. :ok:

Cheers

Liam

ps. If it makers you feel any better, I've just finished on a mates PC. 38 separate hijacks.. and 5 premium rate dialers included. :)

I couldn't beleive the machine was still running. :)

E-Liam,

All done but I think there are still some problems. When I ran HJT again to mark the items to fix, there were a couple of different entries - some missing, some new! Also, I could not locate the file w3skscin.exe or the folder VBouncer. I have run AdAware and Spybot but both have some items which cannot be deleted - they seem to be around"funweb" and "coolwww".

Anyway, here is the latest HJT log:

Hi Aiglon,

Phase two then.. :) WinTools is a pain in the butt, but we're getting there. :)

I just noticed that you are using an out of date version of HJT. Could you please open HJT, click on Config | Misc. Tools | Check for Updates and follow the prompts, then in the updated HJT go into Config | Misc Tools | Open Host File Manager and check for the 01 entries listed in the log.. delete them if found. Then post a new log. CWS didn't show up in the last log, but the later version gives me more info.

So..

Please download CWShredder from here (http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe) update and then run it (Click the Fix--> button, rather than the Scan button. Then run HJT and fix the following entries..

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)

O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com

O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com

O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

Then boot into safe mode and find and delete the following folder..

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\[b]WinTools

Then reboot and post the new updated log, and we'll see how well we're doing.. :)

Cheers

E-Liam,

Here is the latest log. It still shows those 01 hosts!!

CWShredder will not run - it starts then fails with an error message saying it has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I cannot locate the folder c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\[b]WinTools

aiglon,

Some of the Coolwebsearch variants stop the spykillers working. Try running PepiMK's Coolwebsearch Smartkiller Remover first, then CWShredder.

http://www.safer-networking.org/files/delcwssk.zip

Only a 52k file

Other advice, and the above link, here:

http://www.scumware.com/apps/scumware.php/action::view_article/article_id::1075329940/topic::Scumware,-Spyware,-Adware-&-Malware-Applications/

Link to Smartkiller Remover is near the bottom.

Hope this helps.

coolwebsearch smartkiller doesn't seem to do anything - just tells me that the application is not on my system.

Hi Aiglon,

Sorry, I've been a bit busy with the website. I left you to try messybeasts help first. I'm just off out for a bite to eatr, so I'll have another look in a while. If you could post teh latest HJT log, it would help.

Here we go,

Note. If you want to do a system restore, back to a time before all this happened, I won't feel offended.. honest.. :)

If not, you may want to book some time off work. A month should do.. :ok: :)..

Here we go..

Click here (http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe) to download L2mfix.

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Read and Accept the agreement. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!.

Cheers

Hi Aiglon,

Next step..

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Cheers

Liam

E-Liam,

The best news I've had all week :)

I've installed Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard on that machine now so hopefully that will help. I have also told the boy not to keep visiting all those game sites but I know he won't listen :*

Thanks for all your help, much appreciated :ok:
