"electronic" logbooks

unfortunately had a close call earlier this week when my car was broken into and amongst other things, my flight bag (containing my logbook) was stolen! :{ :mad:

luckily the flight bag was returned (minus a couple of unimportant bits and pieces) thanks to a good samaritan who was duely reimbursed with a bottle of vodka!! :ok:

the point of my story being that i've seen a few 'electronic' logbooks on the net, but all in american style. now i know that an electronic logbook is not considered legal by CASA, but does anyone know of an australian style electronic logbook?

my thinking being that running an electronic logbook at the same time could at least let you provide some sort of proof of hours flown if your logbook is lost/stolen (touch wood)!

anybody got any ideas?!

Electronic log books are legal if printed out and bound.
I also run both though and works well, can check your accuracy of adding easily and when you come to do a log book summary or update your CV it is just so easy.
This has been mentioned on the other site but this is a top program Excel based!!

The airlines like to see you thumps down a BIG FAT GREASY logbook full of spelling mistakes, bad hand-writing, corrections, and 50 or 60 regos of the exact same crusty old GA sh!t-heaps they also flew 50 years ago.

TNB, I purchased a flight and duty time program in early 2003, DFT (Duty and Flight Times) v8.0. The software proved to be an excellent product for flight and duty time / log book management.

I presented electronic print outs from the log book (displayed in a lose leaf folder) to CASA in early 2004 to obtain my ATPL license. This posed no problem with CASA (at that time) and the log book was actually commented on by the CASA FOI as a very effective tool. Since then though I have heard that the electronic print out is required to be bound. Not sure of the actual requirements, either way no big deal really.

In regards to the airlines giving it the big thumbs down and I am not entirely convinced this is the case. I completed interviews / testing with a leading regional airline in Auz last year, and again was given favorable comments in regards to the electronic log bock in the actual interview. At a later date I was offered employment with this airline.

It probably is an excellent idea though to run both systems as it is a comforting piece of mind simply knowing that there is an electronic record.

Have used the product myself for the past 7 years. It is Australian, written be an Airline Pilot and customisable for many different regulatory jurisdictions around the world.

I have tried many different "trial" versions of other electronic logbooks and very few come close to this product.

FWIW, I keep a working logbook for daily use at the training organisation, I copy up each day into a "fair log" which is one of the Aviation Theory Centre logbooks (and stays at home), and I also keep an electronic logbook using the spreadsheet module of MS Works v7. When the computer is backed up, so is the electronic log.

The log is also duplicated on my notebook 'puter. Electronic logging via a spreadsheet allows accurate tallying of hours for various duties etc but I still like the handwritten logbook(s) as a permanent record.

Fortunately I am not in the heavy commercial end of aviation, so this arrangement works well for me. Whether this satisfies CASA is not relevant as I don't operate under their immediate aegis.

Ok I am not to sure on the whole log book thing but just had an idea...having a brother that is a programmer would it be possible for him to make something up that could be used as a back up of a logbook (probably using MS Access?) Do the electronic versions of logbooks look like something simple?

Question, is the data entry easy, as I have heaps of hours, and I really don't want to spend years typing my details in. Can things be entered in default for multipule entries etc ok ?

I use this. It is cheap and great. I also periodically photocopy the pages out of my log book and keep them in a afe place in the event I loose my main one.

What I do is, I photo copy the pages everytime I fill around 2-3 pages and keep it somewhere filed in a folder with ring binders at home. I was actually thinking of scanning all the pages, put it in a CD. A bit tedious but at least I wont have to pull my hair out trying to remember the last 10 years what I've done.

Just to put my bit in,

I know a guy who started at CX whose logbook was entirely electronic. He just printed out the relevant pages.

CX didn't seem to mind.

Company in Perth called Windsock Productions put out an electronic one approved by CASA called Aerolog. Anout $100. Look it up on their website.
