Quick look at the sectional appears to put this just outside an alert area (marked "High Density Student Training" on the sectional), A561, (Altitude: From Surface to 4,000' AMSL, Effective Times: MON-FRI SR-SS, Weather Restriction: Visual Flight Rules), but beneath the Sheppard 1 MOA, (Altitude: From 8,000' AMSL to 17,999' AMSL, Effective Times: MON-FRI 1 HR PRIOR SR-1 HR AFTER SS, Weather Restriction: Visual Flight Rules / Instrument Flight Rules).

TFR for recovery is centered at 342029N/0984806W, the Wichita Falls/SPS/ VORTAC 325 degree radial at 24 miles.

Air Tractor pilot was about 60 miles into a roughly 750 mile flight from Texas to South Dakota, delivering the aircraft to a customer. Air tractor pilot was killed, and the two crewmen from the Tweet (Capt. and 2nd Lt.) were able to get out of the airframe and survivied with minor injuries.

The Air Force says the midair happened at 5,000 ft. The METAR from KFDR (roughly 7 or 8 miles NW of the accident site) says 050 OVC. However, observers on the ground were able to see the midair. The aircraft ended up on the ground within a mile of each other.

I trained at Sheppard AFB in the 70's. This stuff scared me then, and it continues to scare the hell out of me now.

Condolences to the family and friends of Dierk Nash, the Tractor pilot.

I spent 1700+ hours flying out of Sheppard on the T-37, from 92-96. And that area has a letdown to the Visual entry point for the VTP. The Radar guys do a great of pointing out who they have on the radar...at least they did. And as most know...the Civilians are advised not to operate there...but if they have some place to go and it is shortest! No a nice surprise when you are just setting out on a delivery!
