A quick question from a civvie... I think I saw a similar (or the same) Huey flying over central London this morning - I noticed that
(a) It was a Huey
(b) It had a yellow top (technical bit)
Just curious, is this a UK forces helicopter ? I didn't think we still flew them...

There are 11 in the fleet, and they are used at 60 (R) Sqn DHFS at Shawbury and also SARTU at Valley. The hull letters spell out:
S-I-X-T-Y----R-U-L-E----OK

O & K are slightly differant from the rest having larger side windows. I was also at Coltishall the other day when this photo was taken along with 40 odd other spotters. We should get PPrune hats to show solidarity.

Have to say that the Bell 412 Griffin lacks the `nails` sound of a Bell UH1 Huey, but it still looks the part.

A-B-I-W Are you the kettle or the pot? Now where is that photo taken at Purple Star 96 with A-B-I-W playing with his shooter?

you did indeed see a Griffin over London today. In fact there were 3 overnight at Notholt last night, 2 departed late morning via helilanes to Isle of Dogs and on to Shawbury the other went out to the west en-route Shawbury. The Griffin is a Bell 412EP a 4 blades 2 engines modern version of the huey.

A good friend of mine was working in MOD whilst this aircraft was being procured and has an interesting tale to tell ref the name.

Does anyone know why it is called the Griffin?
