Evening
Silly question really, but why most pilots don’t wear hats anymore?!
Is it perhaps, due to the increase in a 'hair-style', as apposed to a ‘hair-cut’ today; and the associated risk of the ‘hair style’ being damaged beyond repair by a hat? Or is it because the managers can’t be arsed to pay for them.

Hi there,
I had this conversation with a friend of mine who is a long time serving flight crew member.
He said that the hats had been taken out of the uniform in some companies due to a hairloss worry!
Don't know if theres any research on the matter, but it seems that when it gets warm problems with the scalp can occur if under a hat all day.
Though I must say, I feel they added an extra zest to the uniform especially the Captain's with the fried egg on top!

They cost about £60 each and last about 3 years. So over a 30yr career thats £600 spent on hats. A company such as easyJet doesn't have hats and with 1100 pilots thats an annual hat purchase saving of 1100/3 * £60 = £22,000.
Which probably pays for the rent of all of easyLand...
Such are the knifedge economics of this bizzare industry.

I've got a lovely hat (NOT). It lives in a cupboard in my house.
Saves carrying it under my arm between the crew room and the jet.
