I'm thinking of going down to oxford early 2005 and was wondering if anyone has any views (good or bad) on the quality of the ground training.:ok:

Hi,

Was, IMHO, the best ground school in the country. (I was there in 2003 - But look good and hard around the industry for your flying training !).

However, in 2004 they lost at least half a dozen of their best ground instructors to pilotgroundtraining - a new set up.

So give it a good look over before deciding !.

Any comments from late 2004 "graduates" would probably be of use to you...

found it to be fantastic, got me through all the JAA's first time and instructors never were a problem, a good bunch of people. But i did leave ground school just before those instructors went to pilot ground training.

Well as i can say from my experiance, that Oxford Aviation is excellent maybe the best in Ground Studies.I had studied my ground school there and the teachers where excellent,as for the flying alot of the guys where complaing about the long wait and messing around for the flying,would recommend the flying else where.good luck RA

Currently doing groundschool. Instructors top notch. Can't fault Oxford one bit. Best tip though is have a good look around at all the schools and have a chat with the students. Ask them what is wrong with the place (don't expect 5 star accomodation at OAT!) and you'll have a decent idea about what you can expect if and when you get there. Find out what is best for you. Whilst overall Oxford is probably best in the country it might not necesarily suit you as well as some of the other places for one reason or another.

The staff at Oxford were excellent. They gave me support when things looked bad for me and guided me through some areas which had tricky subject matter (there were quite a few!) I'm not the sharpest tool in the box but they helped me get through all 14 exams. Look around but you will not go far wrong with Oxford.

Pete Quinlan - fantastic Instructor!!

Pete taught me Radio Nav, Instruments, Flight Planning, VFR & IFR Comms at ATA (Coventry) who are unfortunately no longer around - fantastc school they were!! He got me through first time in all these subjects. He'll do everything he possibly can for you, although this does not mean you won't need to put some effort in yourself!!

I recall saying to him after achieving just 46% in school finals for Radio Nav that it wasn't looking good and should I reschedule sitting the exam. He told me that he would get me through it and not to worry about it. I took the exam and came away with 87% first time pass.

Pete now teaches at Oxford and so you should do well if you go here, assuming all the instructors are of the same quality and I am sure they are.

Good luck in your training - it can get tough at times but stick with it. Such a great feeling when you're all done!!

finchy, pete quinlan is teaching/mentoring our class at the moment and I have to agree with you, he is an excellent instructor, you won't go far wrong at oxford from my current experience there.

was at oxford doing the modular ground school from 20th oct 2003 - july 2004 - was excellent and passed 13 out of the 14 exams 1st time - just missed one by 3%.
ground instructors were excellent but alot of them have moved to the new school that has been mentioned here before.
big hint is to go somewhere where the feedback question bank is ample and where you are treated as a customer not a school kid.

there is also alot of banter between modular/app at oxford so be prepared.
