If anyone's got info on doing the London to Sydney air race I'd be very interested to hear from you. When is the next one scheduled to take place?

Cheers-

WX.

Good thinking, WX Man. Best to find out the date in plenty of time, so you have ample opportunity to have a DH88 built. ;)

I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if there was another one scheduled. It's not a regular thing; the last one was the first for many, many years.

Last one was a bit of a cock-up from admin point of view but great flying with lovely guys and girls. Most unlikely ever to be repeated due costs/admin/politics(entry fee for that was US$50,000)
next big one will be fun from Vienna to Cape Town and return.
Is much cheaper and easier flying.
ask for details/dates etc

Ah, that's a shame. I'd love to give the London - Sydney a go.

In fact, if there isn't one in the next year or so, a mate and I are planning to just go do it anyway.

Yes, I know, before everyone blasts me from the skies, there's horrendous admin/politics/costs/etc etc etc to be considered - all of which pales into insignificance compared to telling Mrs. FF, mind you - but hey, you're only fairly young once ... ;)

FF :ok:

Cheers for the replies, guys. I presume most people doing it get sponsorship- what sort of companies sponsor this kind of venture?

I'd be interested, like Captain Kirk, in doing it in something small and very slow (I was thinking of a Piper J3 Cub).

What route do they take? I'd be keen to do it following the Hippy Trail via Bosnia, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan (maybe taking in some Afghanistan too), and then Nepal, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, PNG, East Timor and then on to Darwin for the Oz bit. It would take ages, I know, but I intend to write a book of this journey.

All this stems from recently reading Peter Moore's 'The Wrong Way Home'. The idea will be imprinted on my mind until I go and do it!
