"HighJack This" Report

[Sky_Captain]

For those in the know of the "High Jack This" programe, if I was to post up results in the next 24 hours would somebody be able to have a look at the report and give some advice?

I have a bad feeling I have something on this new laptop and I don't know how to sort the problem. Main reasons for concern are 2 complete system shutdowns and other smaller problems.

As you may have read, I've suffered a crashed hard disc and am now using a brand new machine. This means that until I send back my file of C&Ps from work tommorrow, you won't get any of the pretty formatted text I usually do.. although I'm digging it out from previous posts. No great problems that I can see, although you do have a couple of baddies in there.

Please run a new HJT! Scan, and check to fix the following entries, being sure to double check that you haven't missed any. Next, close all browser windows and click the Fix checked button…

Then please delete the following folder..

C:\Program Files\0CAT YellowPages

and empty the recycle bin.

Please download AdAware SE from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
· Automatically save log-file
· Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
· Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
· Scan Within Archives
· Scan Active Processes
· Scan Registry
· Deep Scan Registry
· Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
· Scan my Hosts file

· Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
· All of your hard drives | Proceed

3. Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
· Include additional process information
· Include additional file information
· Include environment information

4. Click the Tweak button and select:
· Under the Scanning Engine:
· Unload recognized processes & modules during scan
· Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
· Under the Cleaning Engine:
· Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

5. Click on Proceed to save the settings.

6. Click Start and on the next screen choose:
· Use Custom Scanning Options

7. Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Next, please reboot again and download Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 from http://security.kolla.de/
Click on Updates | Download Updates, and follow the prompts.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, and click Check for Problems. Once the scan is complete, have SpyBot remove all it finds marked in RED.

Next reboot and go http://housecall.trendmicro.com/, and run the online virus scan; choosing the Autoclean option just before clicking the Scan button.

Then please post a new log from each machine for a final once over.

Adaware, Spybot and housecall all found problems on the laptop and deleted that which it found.

All of the previous problems have stopped, and its working perfectly. The Norton doesn't seem to be doing the best job on it at the moment, but i've been advised to invest in one from my-etrust.com, any advice on whats best :confused:

Re: Norton. From the HJT list, it looks like you're running The 2003/4 AntiVirus package. That's all it's intended to do.. catch viruses. What you had was malware. This is the sort of thing that Adaware, Spybot and Spyware blaster is built specifically to catch.

The Norton product designed to do this is call NIS (Norton Internet Security) and the 2005 version is out now. As far as what products to use, I can tell you what's installed on my machine, and I don't get caught out.. (famous last words). :)

That is...

AVG 7.0 Anti-Virus (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php)

Zone Alarm Firewall (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?lid=pdb_za1)

SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html), which prevents automatic downloads of all malware listed in it's database, and of course, Spybot and Adaware. Spybot's Immunize feature also runs silently in the background, and lets you know of any changes to the registry.

All the above need regular updating (and running, you'd be surprised how many install them and don't ever use thm).. once a week is good enough, unless you see warnings all over the news or forums of a new problem.

AVG updates automatically (just tell it when) and also gives you protection against malicious emails, and adds a note to that effect at the bottom of each. This is especially useful with OE, as you otherwise wouldn't find out until you've opened the message to view the contents.. too late by then. Above all, they're free and do the job well.

Another couple of programs you may want to consider are..

SpywareGuard (http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html)

and

IE-SpyAd (http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD).

Those should be more than enough to protect even the most err.. inquisitive :) of net users. This machine is on and connected to the web for probably 16 hours a day. Admittedly this is my new XP SP2 machine, but the above served me well on my late W98 machine, where MS security updates were the subject of misty-eyed nostalgia. :{

No product/s will guarantee absolute and complete protection, but you'll be as safe as is practicable with all of the above installed.
