Hong-Kong visit

I'm coming to Hong-Kong a few days before my interview, I have 2 nights booked at the Headland but I was thinking of staying closer to the city for my first nights. Could the local tell me what part of Hong-Kong is the best to stay in to visit the city, go to restaurants and get a feeling of what it's like living there?

Where exactly is Headland anyway? If you stay near a subway station it's pretty easy to access the major parts of HK. I heard the train to and from Central and Airport is only 25 minutes? (I usually get a ride the a taxi or take the bus myself). Some regions of HK have more ex-pats than others (like Discovery Bay).

Depends how much you want to pay. You could try staying at the Headland for a few extra days, contact Monica in recruiting to see if she can organise it. Otherwise, there are plenty of hotels in HK, but you would want to stay in the Central area, if getting out and about is your idea. Public transport is excellent, and there are literally thousands of taxi's that are cheap to get around in and most cabbies can speak some english. Go to Lan Kwai Fong and Wan Chai for nitelife, Soho for restaurants, Stanley for some shopping, the Peak for some nice views, wx has been really nice here for the last few weeks and the vis has been great on a few days even! Get over to Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) and Kowloon for a wander around, or a genuine fake watch! Lots to do, and make sure you mention during the interview you came to have a look, and that you loved it!!

Thanks very much for the info Nosegear. I might just stay at the Headland, as one of my friends also recommended and commute from there. I'll be sure to wander around as it is my first visit!

Just for your info, for my first quick Hong Kong visit, I stayed at the Regal Hong Kong (Island Side) in Causeway bay. The train from the airport is the fastest and a convenient way to the city and the hotel provides a free shuttle service from the AEL station when you arrive (as well as back to the station when you want to depart to the airport) From the hotel, it is walking distance to a subway or to tram lines as well as shopping locations. Once you are in the city I got around pretty well with the subway and tram as well as walking. I did not have to use a cab at all. You can see alot of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon in just a couple of days. Further north would have taken longer in my opinion and I plan to leave that to the next HK expedition!

If you just plan to stay at the Headland, once the express train takes you to the city, then you can connect to the subway right away anyway. A visit to Victoria Peak is a Must. And take a walk around there. It's beautiful up there especially this time of year. A good guide book and friends there will do the rest mate. For me, for my first time in Hong Kong the best visit will just be Cathay City. It is fantastic. You'll see.

When your at Cx City, take one of the buses from the road in front can't remember which number and take it to Tung Chung and grab the MTR from there into the city it is like a quarter of the price of taking the airport express and just as quick.
Guess it's more expensive to take the airport express cause people don't know any better, and it is better for those arriving at the terminal. But from CX city don't go to the airport and go in that way, go to Tung Chung and grab the MTR.
You can get anywhere from there, and try to have change, only a few of the automatic ticket machies take bills.

Yeah, the Airport Express is very expensive. I now know better for next time :D Actually from airport terminal, just outside there are buses to Tung Chung as well as many other places. Need coins also though.

Well there is the MTR Tourist pass. Unlimited subway use for 1 or 3 days plus 20 dollars to use on other mode of transportation.

Stay at the Headland at Cathay City. trust me.. then if you wish, easy to get to train to Central in 30-35 minutes time.

Bus is the S64 to Tung chung. Cost is $3.50HKD and then the MTR into town, about $8.00 I think. Tourist octopus card is the best idea, makes it a whole lot easier to get around and most of the 7-11's take it to buy things with as well.....like a beer to get you home:E

FYI the S52 does not go between CX City and Tung Chung ( it does HAECO - Tung Chung - Yat Tung via AFFC).

The bus you need for Tung Chung is the S64 or S64P
