Back in the stone age when I was training to an atco I was taught how to calculate distance using the lat' and long of two different places.

If both places are in the North or Southern hemisphere, the calculation is relatively simple, but I can't remember the procedure if one is in one hemisphere and one in the other.

Is there a web site which will do the calculation?

It's in response to a question asked in a national newspaper.

Many thanks for your time.
the information has been passed on to the Daily Torygraph which publishes an IT/Computer query page every Tuesday.

Thanks again.
