I have heard through a reliable source that 120 Sqn is the unlucky Sqn. Is this true?:oh:

Sad for 120, if true, since they are a distinguished unit with a proud history.

But if one of the three had to go, they are the junior and (in my view) the other two units have an even more distinguished record, so it's the right choice.

But if No.51 Squadron exists to fly just three Nimrods, if the Kipper fleet has 12 or 16 aircraft and 22 crews there ought to be scope to keep four numberplates going - perhaps even five - they could even be commanded by Squadron Leaders! Four Nimrod crews is about 48 aircrew, after all.

Surely 51 Sqn is more than just 3 aircraft, its the RAF's centre of xixixt too?

I guess you guys went to the other brief given to all aircrew at Kinloss by the Stn Cdr this morning! At the one the rest of us attended we were told the decision has still not been made!

Rather than base the decision to de-commission a squadron on its history, size or distinguished battle honours, do you think that the over riding factor would be savings?

Difar - The decision has bot been made. The cheque is in the post and other well known phrases.

...Why not take a leaf from the Army's book, amalgamate them all and call them "The Scottish Squadron" or something like that?...:E (Erm...until they all move to Waddo, of course...:O )

Chickensalad, "I have heard through a reliable source that 120 Sqn is the unlucky Sqn."

'Reliable source' wasn't Piers Morgan was it?

RJ,
51 does indeed only have 3 Nimrod R1s, one of which is a converted MR2 to replace 'Damien' (XW666) which ditched in 1996. What counts more is personnel, and given that the R1 crew is somewhat larger than that of an MR2, 51 Sqn has more than 48 aircrew.

Air International published a cutaway of the R1, with an article, which gave the crew complement as 28. That must challenge the pie van when they land away at places more used to an MR2.....

Surely the crew to aircraft ratio is also important?

And they have the most miniscule galley facilities/crew ratio in the history of man!!! They're still the best in the business mind!

206 to disband.

This afternoon OC 206 told the boys that the discision has been made to disband them.
They had to delay the announcement until the local MSP was informed first by fax!!!:yuk:

What a complete Bloody disgrace! 206 have greater accumulated service than 120, took an active part in the Great War (operational over the Western Front as opposed to non-operational in Blighty) and didn't miss most of the first two years of the Second World War....

Grrrrrrr

Sad Sad days:(

If only someone in the trade could get this in the papers:confused: .

They might expose that the cuts are being made to the forces so they can win another term in office by committing more funds to schools and hospitals for the great unwashed.

I am sure commitments will drop as your leaders will stand up and be counted:sad:

Have a great piss up if the fund is out of the red yet, you might even sell some glassware as mementoes.

Wonder when the Ministerial cutbacks will be announced, before or after their yearly massive payrise.

206, sorry to hear the news.
