Am I wrong to be suspicious of this little blighter? Whenever something slows down, a ctl-alt-del brings up at least one and sometimes two instances of this file running in the background. End Task gets rid of it temporarily, but it always finds its way back. I run Spybot and Adaware regularly, and while they always find something, I haven't seen the name WebRebates among the suspect files deleted. I use ZoneAlarm, in which I have WebRebates0.exe disallowed on all counts, and a fully updated anti-virus program.

A search results in the following files found: C:\Windows\System\WebRebates_Auto_InstallSilent
C:\ProgramFiles\WebRebates\WebRebates0
C:\ProgramFiles\WebRebates\WebRebates1

I have resisted the temptation to execute these files before hearing from the experts, but following is a copy of the ReadMe file helpfully provided.

OK, so obviously some sort of tracking software, but is it likely to be slowing my computer, is it harmful in any way, and what is the best way to get rid of it completely?

Definitely don't need it.

Run a hijkackthis log, post it here (with smilies disabled).

Also would be worth running adaware if not already done.

More info in the FAQ,

Charles

sorry for telegraphic answer, just dashing out to a kids birthday party

Binoculars,

Run HJT! like Charles said. That is a spyware program that hijacks your Browser and sticks popups on the screen.

It is something you do not want in your comp.

Take Care,

Richard

OK, done that. Even after "fixing" there were still items with WebRebates in, and it took three fixes and reboots to get the log to the point where it is now.

But a search still finds the same three files in Windows Explorer as I mentioned in my first post. Any idea of the best way of getting rid of them for good?

I might repeat here for others info that Spybot and Adaware both failed to pick up this particular nasty.

I see that you've got Realsched.exe in there.

One of my sons had horrendous problems with something related to realshced stealing processor cycles. Not saying that's your current problem, but is it possible that there's something lurking in the realsched area that's kicking off each time you boot up?

As far as I can make out, you won't do anything awful to your PC if you disable realsched (rename or move it). It's something to do with scheduling tasks in Real Networks applications.

Binoculars,

You can try going in though Safe Mode and try deleting the files there. If that does not work, use Windows to make a Bootable Floppy. Use the floppy to boot the computer so you can delete the files from there in DOS Mode.

Take Care,

Richard

Hi Binos,

You need to delete the ..

C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEB_REBATES

C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~

folders, and the following file..

C:\Windows\System\WebRebates_Auto_InstallSilent.exe.

Do this in safe mode, and you should be fine.

Then run Adaware and Spybot according to the instructions I've posted somewhere here abouts.

I haven't got access to my C&P for doing this yet, while I'm getting everything set up, so it's not very pretty.. :)

Cheers

Liam

OK, done, lots of thingies removed, including any trace of the WebRebates for the moment. Thank you all for the assistance.

Just for my education, why the Safe Mode start? I noticed it said it was bypassing startup processes, I assume it's something to do with that? Was the Webrebates in my startup somewhere so I couldn't delete it from within Windows in normal mode because it was already running?

Anyway, here's the final HJT log for a final check. Any other thoughts on the Realsched.exe file that SoftTop mentioned? I only use Real Player for files that have to have it to watch.

Thanks again one and all. Great advice as usual. :ok:

Binoculars,

By booting in Safe Mode, windows loads with the bare minimum so you have a better chance of removing nasties from your system. With Win9x you have the chance of booting with a floppy and remove anything in DOS Mode.

Take Care,

Richard

P.S. If your computer is running slow and it speeds up when you stop the REALSCHED.EXE the remove it, if it does not change, leave it.
