I was on a course with work at CWL earlier this week. When we drove to our location at the bottom part of the airport, near to where the aircraft the firecrews use for training, we drove over what appeared to be an old runway between there and the flying club.

Has Runway 12/30 always been the one in use? Or were there others?

Cheers

Yes there used to be a short cross runway that became dissused shortly before the work started on the BAMC site. It was only used by G.A. aircraft from what I recall. I cannot remeber the designation numbers.

Steve.

Thought it looked a bit too large to be a taxi way!

Thanks!

It was designated as Runway 03/21 - a visual runway for daylight use only. It is now used primarily as a taxiing route to the GA area (south side) and for temporary parking on the north side.

Take it you were one of those driving those marked cars at breakneck speeds??!!

Breakneck? There's only so fast you can go in a 1.1 fiesta :E

Was that the area BA had all their old 747's parked on for quite a while?

Southside (where the fire training rig is) is where the BA 742's were kept in storage. The BAMC centre is located northside. The north end of Taxyway E is used as an overflow stand during sporting events or if there are a high number of widebodies on the ground.
