Hi All,
In 1974 Cyprus Airways ran a scheduled service to Manchester CY538/9 Arr1315 Dep1425, according to an old timetable from 1974 only on a Saturday.
Can anyone tell me the very last visit of a Cyprus airways Trident for 1974 at Manchester. I thought I had seen one on the Sat 20 July 1974 on the very weekend of the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey.
I've been told since, the invasion started on the Monday evening 22nd July, so I might of seen one that weekend on that Saturday 20 July, but I can't find any record for this arrival official or non official.
The last visit I've came across is Sat 22/6/74: 5B-DAC in an old LAAS magazine and also according to an enthusiast who sent me this information there where no others after that date because they where up top every Sat from the 29/6, 13/7, 18/7, 20/7, 24/7, 1/8, 3/8, 9/8, 10/8, 16/8, 17/8, 22/8.
But what puzzles me is why not! had they cancelled the service after 22/6/74 and if not why had no others arrived after the 22/6/74 on the scheduled service up until the weekend of 20/7/74 the weekend of the invasion.

Thanks
Albert

Cant help you on this other than I do recall 2 Trident 2E's of Cyprus Airways being flown to LHR some years after the war. Perhaps if someone can answer your question they can provide info as to whether any a/c still remain at Nicosea Airport which as far as I am aware is still in the 'no go zone'.

Thanks,
I got this info from another aircraft message board:-
Cyprus Airways use of the Trident's ended in 22/7/74 with DAB and DAE being w/o
and DAC and DAD being damaged. Both remained at Nicosia until 1977 when they
were bought by BA, repaired and flown back to the UK. DAD to G-ASWU and to LHR 12/5/77. DAC became G-AVFB (also to LHR 12/5/77?).
Still no info on any visits to Manchester from 29/6 to 20/7 and if the service was cancelled or not from the 29/6.

While based in MAN a few years ago, noticed a Trident nose section in the air museum there, but wondered if there are any entire aircraft remaining on display for public viewing...especially as this was quite a remarkable aeroplane, for its time.

Hi 411a

Yes there are a number of Tridents in preservation and at the time of writing one is being transfered to Manchester from Heathrow for the viewing park at the airport.
I`ll check the website and add to the list later
