I've just parted with $1000 for a M1 Visa non re-refundable processing fee. I feel I may have payed more than I should have. can anyone advise me if I have payed over the top

You certainly have - try moving the decimal point one place to the left, then you'de be about right.

HOPEFULLY the remaining funds from that fee will be placed onto your flying account.

The only fees that are applicable for the visa are:

* $100.00 SEVIS service fee
* Fee to the US Embassy where you will visit which varies but is on average $100.00

There is another fee associated with the TSA of $130 but this has nothing to do with the visa application fee.

Some schools require a course deposit before paperwork is sent; this should be a course deposit though nothing to do with the visa fees. This course deposit is either likely to be refundable as long as you cancel in their time limit minus any admin fees, placed on your account as credit or refunded at the end of your course.
