Hiya, has anyone got a simple handy set of universal multi(piston) IF checks that they have used/developed. Perhaps set out in an easy to remember sequence or use a nice easy nuemonic to keep you ahead of the game? Any ideas or advice appreciated.

I used to use DOWNFAGT.

Went something like;

D DG compass aligned
O Orientation. What direction you were from, what entry to use
etc
W Wind considerations
N Navaids, tuned identified etc
F Fuel, minimum divert fuel etc
A Altitudes, initial, holding pattern, minima etc
G Go around, in the event of..
T Traffic

Is that what you were thinking of?

Most NZ MEIR trainers use a breif 'normal checklist' (list of critical items arranged by phase of flight). The best idea is to learn the list so that you can action the stated items from memory, followed by the checklist.

Example
LINE-UP CHECKLIST
TRANSPONDER . . . . . . ALT
STROBE/LDG LIGHTS . . . ON
PITOT HEAT . . . . . . . . ON
DI/COMPASS . . . . . . . ALIGNED
TKOFF SAFETY BRIEF . . . COMPLETE

Hope that helps, let me know if you want a full checklist.

I use ABRIEFS b4 T.O.D.

A: Atis
B: Brief the approach plate
R: Radios and nav aids tuned etc
I: Instruments (HSI,RMI,Compass all pointing same direction)
E: Engine (Ts and Ps, suction)
F: Fuel (selectors, pumps, contents)
S: Cabin secure

Cheers

ABRIEFS is good. That's more what I'm looking for.
Thanks for so far.
Cloud Clutter I like the sound of your idea, I plan on memorising the brief checklist for the aircraft I'm gonna hour build in. It will all depend on Aircraft specific checks I guess. I would like the full check list though, thanks.

Keepem coming please.

to keep you ahead of the game

Next event? Something that should be asked quite regularly to keep you ahead. Nothing feels worse than IMC at night with a rushed approach.

The arrival is usually the trickiest segment. ABC keeps me out of trouble. (Actually AABCCD)

A - Atis (Wx at Dest)
A - Aids (TIT, Orientate)
B - Brief (Approach Brief)
C - Clearance (or Broadcast)
C - Checks (Initial Approach Cx)
D - Descent (Revise TOD)

Most of these can be done early in the cruise. A good check list should check that you have done the above actions. Haven't seen an approved one in GA though. Suprise suprise.

I use a few more which depend on the type of approach. I find the simpler the better.

Here's yet another one...

A - Altimetry/ATIS and Instruments
A - Aids and Orientation
A - Airframe and Systems
A - Approach Brief

Whatever works for you I guess!

One for as you commence your approach!

T=Time (Start your stop watch)
T=Turn (Turn to the required heading)
T=Twist (Twist the OBS to your outound track)
T=Throttle (Reduce to approach power)
T=Talk (Let everyone know what you are doing)

Cheers, HH.

I'd also add another T with the above

T=Tone (as the ident needs to be monitored for NDB's)

In the early days of GA it was always interesting to be able to identify the navaid that was supposed to fill the hole in the panel.

There you have it.....my guide to GA IFR checklist, it works cause Ive done it for thousands of hours...but a checklist is only of use when you KNOW your aircraft systems...and how they operate.
You should be able to recite this backwards.....upside down...inside out.....whilst driving at high speed...or my particular favourite....whilst eating
