Found the same picture on the USAF website

This picture is all over the internet, have seen it many a time. Question is, do you think it is real or fake....? ;)
I just hope the photographic aircraft was going the same way:D

The photo may well be all over the internet but the original seems to have come from the USAF. The Military photographer would have been able to control the setup of the picture in a way that a hobby photographer could not.
Real or fake? I would say real.

:D Yea, I think it is genuine. I have seen similar trails like that from passing aircraft quite a few times, (but not as good as and from that angle either) and I don't think Staff Sgt Cullen who took the photo would blag it being in the USAF of course.
At a guess I would say it was real.
One of my many C130 flights was over/through cloud with the ramp open. Unfortunately I did not have my camera wioth me on that occasion but our passage through the clouds was very similar. I can only assume that the much larger and heavier C17 would have a more stunning effect.

One of Flying's staff photographers - Paul Bowen I think it was - used to specialise in pics of exec jets that looked just like this to acompany the flight test articles. I imagine he must have used an aircraft equipped like Arthur Gibson's Aztec.
It looks real enough to me!

I have a print of a Citation VI taken by Paul Bowen over Lake Tahoe (was on front cover of Flying Magazine March 92). According to the blurb it was taken from the tail gunner position of a B25.
Much prettier and aesthetic than the C17 pic, but with a similar wake effect.

That's the one I remember PR! I think he did some others as well. B-25 eh? Ahhhh... That would look good against the clouds as well!

I've sat in the tail gunners position of an IL76MD and that really does happen I saw it as we climbed through and held just above the cloud layer - never had camera sadly

I can't say I have much say as a pilot, but as an artist, the shadows in it just don't add up. In the example of the exec jet someone posted, see how the light/shadow on the a/c is corresponding to the cloud? Can't see that on the pic in question. So, my guess is - both parts are real, but not originally together....

The original photograph looks real enough to me, but couldn't help thinking that it looked awfully like a photo of the aircraft superimposed upon an X-Ray of a colon.

Having been sat in the back of a B-25 [N1042B Tallmantz Aviation - stuffed full of Movie cameras and seen many similar situations, it looks real to me. The lighting is hard to judge because often you have [just out of picture] a wall of reflecting cloud, or even two hit by a low sun [ in this case] from the left hand side. One is close enough to the cloud to have little definition. Also the camera in question must have a longish focal length lens on as there is little perspective on the engines, you are looking at the centres of each of the intakes so the photography aircraft is some way ahead of the C-17. C-17's are matte finish and only reflect when wet unlike biz-jets super gloss paint. [Got 10 hours in the B-25's left hand seat during transits - happy times (:>)

When I read your comment, I had to signup and say that we've had similiar thoughts. Part real, part fake was on my mind too. After reading through this thread several times, the documentation on the photo's Internet page ( http://chamorrobible.org/gpw/gpw-20041010.htm ), plus some other reading, I believe the photo is real. To my surprise even the thumbnail image of the photo is quite impressive (look in the Oct. 2004 (http://chamorrobible.org/gpw/gpw-2004-10-Fagualo-October.htm) archive at http://chamorrobible.org/gpw/gpw.htm for day 10). I don't know, but maybe with your artist's eye you can spot something by examining the large original photo at http://www.af.mil/media/photodb/photos/030202-F-0193C-004.jpg which really gets your attention. (In case you're wondering, the link was pulled from http://chamorrobible.org/gpw/gpw-20041010.htm ). As an aside, the site where the C-17 Globemaster III photo was recently published has a number of remarkable photos.
