Hong Kong ESF Schools

Hi again all

Looking into shifting my family up to HK (if I get through final that is) and am weighing up the differences between DBIS and the ESF (apart from the cost as we have that information). My question is if there is anyone out there with their kids in one of these ESF schools, can I get your opinion of it?

cuzzie, the schools are good but they don't teach anyfink good. in my school thye teach a lot of supply and demand with regard to night freight businesses.

This question has been asked and answered here before but for your info, I had five kids in ESF from primary to high school grades during my 33 year tenure in HKG. High class numbers required a lot of effort on student performance results but education standards were always high and facilities quite good. Generally, Asian kids mostly surpassed caucasians academically, which was due to parental assistance and subsequent student efforts to succeed.

Thanks for your reply Hotdog. I also know a bit about ESF schools as my family was there for about 27 years and I went to one of the primary schools - but I am sure things have changed...

I think that the original question was more concerning specifics about DBIS. An example of one the differences might be class numbers - DBIS have 2 fulltime teachers (one is an 'assistant') per class of 25 kids. Don't know about the other schools.

I believe that some of the secondary school kids travel from DB to Island or West Island schools also. How is this working out? Are the kids coping, how long is the trip, is it expensive, are they good schools?

What are some of the other primary school options from DB and how do they get there?

If anyone has the time I (and I'm sure others) would appreciate any feedback.

Hey thanks for all the responses

We actually have a meeting arranged with DBIS and at this stage, it would definetly be our preferance. The reason for the thread was to get another perspective on a cheaper school. Obviously the main concern is to not disadvantage our child, but to also choose a financialy viable option.

We have one child who is 7 and we have been told that it is a bit easier to get in when older than schoool starting age.

I see that there are quite a number of possible ESF schools, we were going to look at one in central called Glenealy (mainly because it's very close to the ferry) but would be interested in seing if there is a preferance based on more than location for expatriate families.
