Reporting Points - I need your help !!

Once again, <a href="http://www.nicklocke.co.uk/Points" target="_blank">my site</a> has been updated and now shows the AIP changes due on 24 January.

Do any of you have any inside knowledge on how the new points BEDRA, DINIM, DOGAL and SOMAX acquired their names?

Any volunteer to scribble a few paragraphs as a layman's guide to RVSM?

Also, history and anecdotes on reporting points generally seems to be drying up a bit at the moment.

Come on - let's get the job finished!!!!

The only one I can help you with is DOGAL which is short for DONEGAL adjacent to it in Eire.

RVSM stands for Reduced Vertical Separation Minima. With effect from 24th Jan 2002 RVSM will be implemented in most European airspace and has already been in force on the North Atlantic and UK airspace for some years.

In the early days of high altitude flight it was discovered that pressure altimeters were relatively inaccurate at high altitude and therefore 2000ft separation was used above FL290. In recent years the advent of Air Data Computers has meant that height keeping is much more accurate now, and it was decided to increase capacity on the NAT tracks by reducing separation to 1000ft. When this was successful the UK domestic airspace followed suit. From 24/1/02 all traffic between FL290 and FL410 will have to be RVSM compliant or it will be excluded.

In the old days, we used levels 2000ft apart in each direction. Therefore Eastbound levels were FL290, 330, 370, 410 etc. Westbound were FL310, 350, 390 etc. Under RVSM, Eastbound levels are FL290, 310, 330, 350, 370, 390 and 410. Westbound levels are FL300, 320, 340, 360, 380, 400. Above FL410 it reverts to 2000 ft separation, so the next usable level is FL430 Westbound, FL450 Eastbound.

brightling if you're referring to colour conventions on that delightful old-world creature known as a paper strip, yes I suppose so. They're all green radar tracks downunder. Or blue. Or salmon. Or white. Or black.

Might lead to confusion for those going out to the Ocean.

Back when I was first building my site Nick Locke's Reporting Points (http://www.nicklocke.co.uk/points) I received lots of help from people on PPRuNe about the right way to embed Mapblast maps onto my pages.

Unfortunately, Mapblast have withdrawn their service.

Does anyone know of another company that can provide dynamic maps based on the supply of WGS84 coordinates?

Don't know about WGS84, but www.streetmap.co.uk can accept OSGB co-ords.
