Does anyone know what is the shortest possible distance between an aerodrome or airport in Australia, and an aerodrome or airport in New Zealand?
(And, what are the two airports?
I'm guessing it would be somewhere in the vicinity of Hobart to Dunedin, 1100nm.

Lord Howe - Norfolk Island 484.2nm
Norfolk Island - Kaitaia NZ 452.7nm
All distances via the airways. Customs needs to be pre arranged in Kaitain. Also a tailwind in both directions is available if you time it right.

Have a look at http://www.diamond-air.at/en/press/pressarchive/40820.htm. In a few weeks we can do Port Macquarie to Kaitaia 1048nm and return to Sydney without the use of a passport. You might need a potty though.

Now I gotta find me an aircraft that will fly those sort of distances... (I like the sound of the route via Lord Howe and Norfolk..)

the norfolk/lord howe route is pretty popular + obvious - i know some local guys who fly their C206 quite regularly over this route - they have 6 hours range on board, so don't need any extra fuel tanks - basically gas up and go.

how do you (legally) do a transtasman without a passport?
