I did see a Russian looking (ie it had the lower front gunner/nav/bomb aimer position) four engine prop plane on the ramp opp T2 as I came in from CDG last night. I only just noticed it as we went past, and I couldn't get a good look. May have been it or another Russian, possibly an AN12?

Props made a funny sound as well

The AN22 arrived friday to take a spare engine to Lanzarote for a grounded First choice 757. It returned today with the u/s engine and stays till wednesday. It is the only airworthy civilian AN22, It is operated by ADB. AWESOME

It went over runcorn around 1830 turning onto 090deg, I would say around 5000ft, what a fantastic sound it made.

OK (some of you).. this'll make your hearts ache. Friend of mine - one the the Heathrow ATCOs still at London Terminal Control has an interest in flying in as many different types of a/c as possible. I think he's way over 300 and a few years ago he managed to wangle his way on board an An-22 flying from Germany to Russia for a "new type". He told the crew what he did... held a PPL... had his own aeroplane... flew balloons, etc.. and they let him fly the thing manually for a while!!!

After a two day lay-over it departed at about midday. I was in a local park with the brats and heard it trundle past in the distance. ( Damm! why did I take today off.) Had a quick look aroud it yesterday and I must say that it looks FANTASTIC!!!. It could have done with a lick of paint though.
Hears a quick question: Is it the only one flying?. I know that it's the only civil one but what about the military?.
Please bring it back to Manchester!!!

I hear also from the engineers that they expect to be able to keep it flying for only another six months or so.

Urrhhh.. How can you think of them both at the same time? One is a real aeroplane; the other is a boring, modern-day tin tube!

Has anyone successfully viewed or downloaded this clip? I've tried several times without any luck and I have broadband and a fast PC..

Thanks for the movie clip!

I've wanted to see and hear this plane for a long time. It's an amazing sound...very similar to the B36 (http://www.air-and-space.com/peacemkr.htm)

Click on the button in the upper right hand corner that says "Hear the B36"

There's a sound we'll never hear again....:(

The file works fine for me, and what a glorious sound and sight it is too.

It does take a while to load, even on a fast connection.

Wonder how many people on here have heard a B36 for real? When I was a spotter in the 50s one flew over my home in Morden, Surrey and I can still see and hear it to this day - amazing.

Still trying with the other clip...

Do you have the Quick Time player installed mate?

If not go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qt/ and download the free player. Then try.

If you do already have it installed it may be a connection issue. In this case if you PM me your e-mail address (I've misplaced it, I know I had it once) I shall email you the video file :)

Not I...I'm too young! ;)

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 60's and, as a child, I remember being lulled to sleep by the warm, droning sound of heavy recips flying over the Bay. Looking back I wonder if some of them were the Air Force C124's on their way to Hawaii...

Strange, I've got the same prob with the QT file - mind you, our office QT is badly installed and I can't fiddle - I'll take the file home and try it there.

I've been lucky enough to see the 22 twice over Purley, first time "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT NOISE?", second time, I barely needed to go outside to check!

Cor, B-36 eh, would love to have seen one! WAV file is great, wish I had speakers on my PC, I'd wake up my colleagues...!

I wonder the Bear (TU-95/142) or the TU-114 would've sounded like?

BOAC
9th Sep 2004, 13:20
Bear - unique noise - heard it, bone-dome on, in the pressurised cockpit of a Lightning a few times in the 70's at 28-33000 feet up by Iceland. About 100 feet away sometimes a little bit closer.............

Props were supersonic at the tips. Had a camera with me but sadly no tape deck:D

I understand that one appeared at Farnborough one year. When was that?

Sorry for the topic drift.....

Must have been Farnborough 1998? It did itself proud by landing partly on the grass beside the runway, leaving huge wheel marks!!

It was 1988 (doesn't time fly?)

You recall the exciting landing then (over on AH&N, Aeorhack told us he was was staying in a hotel under the approach when it landed and was in the bath, torn between modesty and curiosity!)

Nah, 1990 or 1992 I think - I'm sure I had my Dolly Sprint at the time, and drove down to see it...

Came in with a spare engine for the An-124 or An-225 which was poorly.

Edited to say beaten by WUB - Yes, 1988 - must have been my older Dolomite 1500 "A Piece of Lace" a reference to it's Swiss cheese syle bodywork!
