Apologies if this is in the wrong forum or has already been discussed, but I am curious as to why the latest Airbus offering is the A380. To date each new type has been the next in sequence starting with the A300 up to the A340 (with logical numbering of sub-variants in the 320 range). Why, therefore, is the A380 not the A350? On a like note, will the B7E7 become the 787?

I think it's the A380 because the 8 represents the shape of the fusalage.

Also to enhance the novelty ...
By doing so, they set aside the 350/360/370 designators for other programs. Similarely, the military transport under development starts the process by being awarded the A.400 type designator.
I keep thinking the 7E7 will become the 807.
