View Full Version : Cookie observation
phnuff 1st July 2004, 10:57 I know that the subject of pprune delivering cookies has been raised before and with the exception of those associated directly with this site, I believe the answer was that proon didnt put marketing devices on systems; any which were found were from advertisers who were breaking the pprune guidelines.
FYI, this morning when I logged on, my cookie catcher found
ACID (from advertising.com)
CFCLIENT_CPGUARD (from CBPLogin.com)
CFGLOBALS (from digitalorderguard.com) - this last one appeared to have a unique id associated with it
Are these pprune cookies, or is an advertiser being naughty ?
phnuff - I cannot see any sign of them on my machine. Have you been 'elsewhere?
phnuff 1st July 2004, 12:34 No, - am am certain they came from prune. I normally dont use IE, but this morning logged on and my cookie wall spotted them. I then cleared all cookines and started again noting them all (and rejecting btw). It is only when you go through the enter username/password dalog

It could be your Browser is being hijacked. Another possibility, what is your IE Home Page you are using?
Just to be sure, run Ad-Aware and/or Spybot.
Take Care,
Richard
I've just had a look at the cookies on my machine (I use Opera - accept normal cookies without question, refuse all third-party cookies), and I do have the first cookie you mention, although not the other two. However, it's not a PPRuNe-only browser, and after deleting the cookie and setting Opera to prompt me about all cookies I'm not seeing it reset from PPRuNe when I log out and back in again (I've tried IE as well, same result)
I believe that PPRuNe customises advertising depending on your location - are you UK, or elsewhere?

yes I'm in the UK - I normally use Mozilla but there are some sites (banking with HSBC forinstance) which are too heavily built around IE hence the need for ocasional IE usage. Cookie wall from analogx kills 'em for me
Richard
The home page is www.waitrose.com - a supermarket here whcih also supplies ISP services (their new broadband is great for anyone considering trying it). I do use AdAware and Spybot as a matter of course although I am a bit worried for spybot; no updates for months
I have just tried the logon again with cookie wall set to intercept everything and I get the same results

Change your home Page to Blank. Then clear all your cookies and try again. See if you still get the cookies.
Take Care,
Richard

You need to update to SpyBot version 1.3. The updates for the old version 1.2 have been stopped but the latest update for version 1.3 was made available on 16-06-04.
four_two 2nd July 2004, 00:19 phnuff,
I'm not an expert on this but I had the same problem with Spybot. Have you checked your version against the latest version? Once I downloaded the latest one, the updates started again.
Well there you go, by the time it took me to type my response Phoenix beats me too it!
phnuff 5th July 2004, 14:09 I had a play with this over the weekend and it may seem daft, but when I tried it early on saturday morning, I got the cookies as described earlier, when I did it later, I didnt. So, I tried again yesterday and got the same results. I wonder if it is from a customised advert ?
I got the new spybot - Thanks for the steer guys
