Just a short enquiry. How long would a runway have to be to operate a 737-800? Sea level, fairly warm (say 30 degrees max) and at MTOW.

A rough figure would be fine.

Thanks

It must be approximately 8800ft with the following configurations
- B26 K Engine Thrust
- Flaps 5
- A/C bleeds ON
- Anti Ice OFF
- NIL wind and Runway Slope
- 30 C at Sea level
This weight is field limited takeoff weight based on FPPM

Same conditions, except
-Flap 25
-Bleeds OFF

..about 2,200m (7,200ft) - Field limit.

I just one to add one more thing:

Although it seems that the greater flap settings (i.e 25 Flap rather than 5) results shorter field requirement, this is only true when we have disregarded the climb requirements.

Because according to regulations (that is ICAO, JAR, FAR), once the airplane becomes airborne, the available climb gradient cannot be less than 2.4% in the case of one engine failure. With the take off flap 25, the calculated climb gradient is about 1.75% (less than required 2.4%) at the max structural take off weight 79 000 Kg. The garadient for 5 flap is about 2.7% at the same conditions. This means, the minumum legal required field length will be somewhere between 7200-8800 feet and the optimum flap for this weight will be above 5, but less than 25.

These are all true, when no obstacle is assumed at the take off direction.

Topic of extending GCI runway has just started again Guernsey Press. Which 737's can operate from here without problems?
