Backpackers to work with OzJet

Backpackers Express, the start-up airline that plans to carry backpackers on the Kangaroo Route, is about to join forces with Australian-born Formula One team boss Paul Stoddart.

The partnership will see Backpackers Express using the B747-200 and B737 aircraft of Stoddart's European Aviation business, which has reduced its operations.

Backpackers Express md Glenn Millen said his company was nearing the end of negotiations with Stoddart, who earlier this year delayed his plans to launch leisure carrier OzJet in Australia until the end of 2005.

Millen said Backpackers Express could connect with Ozjet once the latter began operating in Australia.

It has not been decided whether Backpackers Express will rent the aircraft from European Aviation or whether the two companies will merge.

Backpackers Express is due to take to the skies in early November and will initially fly to Melbourne from Manchester and Munich via New Delhi.
