Fast-expanding low cost airline, Jet2.com, which operates out of Leeds Bradford and Belfast International airports, has received a major independent customer satisfaction award beating 27 other major airlines to be the number one UK-based ‘Best Short-Haul Airline’.

At an awards ceremony in Rhodes yesterday, Mariella Frostrup announced that Jet2.com was second overall, behind Nordic-based airline Finnair, in the category which covers all charter, no-frills and scheduled short-haul airlines.

More than 22,000 travel consumers took part in the annual Travel Awards survey held by the Guardian, the Observer and Guardian Unlimited online users – only Finnair and Jet2.com were singled out for achieving such high satisfaction scores in a demanding field.

Jet2.com was the number one ranked UK-based low cost airline ahead of BMI Baby (10th), Flybe (17th), easyJet (18th) and Ryanair (24th) – it was also placed ahead of all other UK airlines including national flag carrier British Airways (8th).

Philip Meeson, Jet2.com boss, said: “Already, this has been a fantastic year for us so far – absolutely fantastic.

“In February we were awarded the title of the world’s most punctual airline flying into Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, in March we surpassed the half-a-million passenger mark and in April we added three new routes: Leeds to Venice and Murcia and Belfast to Prague.

“However, this latest accolade is a real achievement for everyone associated with Jet2.com both in Yorkshire and in Northern Ireland as not only was it voted for by the public who fly with us it reflects the fantastic job our staff do for us.

“Perhaps unlike some airlines, for us low cost doesn’t mean no-frills, and it certainly doesn’t mean we neglect things like customer service and punctuality.

“These operating principals have been given a huge public endorsement and all of us at the airline are absolutely delighted with this award.”

This certainly refelcts my experience of traveling with to/from PMI last week. Flights on time both ways (to the minute), friendly and attentive cabin crew and for Saturday lunch-time flights down to Majorca, I paid less than the ambiguous "flight supplement" that the main package operators charge for similarly timed flights from the North. Even had PPruner "The Flying Scotsman" at the controls for the return sortie. Great stuff.

It's taking a while for people to reply to you 682!

Well done to Jet2 - I agree they seem to be doing very well at what they do. I've flown a few times now and it's all very good stuff. Punctuality seems to be a strong point as well - guess it's the cargo influence.

Any thoughts on what they are going to do next? Seems they're emerging as a strong competitor in the market - but they've got to grow to do this.... Anybody got wind of next moves?

Congratulations to PM and the team, quite an achievement in just their first year. A savvy move as well; satisfied customers = repeat business and word of mouth recommendation. It also gives them some discretion on pricing. Not a massive amount of course, demand is still highly sensitive to pricing, but building a reputation for being 'good' does give them some latitude.

Lemming - not sure about any specific details of what's next, but I'm told they have dusted off another of the ex-Ansett -300s and that it should be due to arrive at Leeds by the end of the month to become the 7th based aircraft. No real reason to do this unless there were more routes in the pipeline.

No one seems quite sure of bmi regional's strategy up at Leeds at the moment, least of all bmi. There could be a genuine opportunity for Jet2 to make a success of routes that bmi either won't or can't make a decent effort of themselves.
