Can anyone identify this for me please? Should be an easy one but I've got a mental block!!!

I think its a Shorts or an Avro? I have a feeling it was part of the Avro Vulcan project but I'm not sure.

The photo is one from my Dads collection and he can't remember what it is or where it is taken!!! if anyone can help it'd be appreciated.

The aircraft is a Avro 707 and it was as you say part of the Vulcan test program.

cheers guys. don't suppose any of you may have an idea where it was taken? I know it looks like any other airfield and airshow!!!! may be a farnborough show but again, I'm not too sure, the aircraft was before my time!

Yep, that's an Avro 707, part of the Vulcan project - there were about 4 or 5 I think and several variants - the B had a dorsal air intake aft of the cockpit and presumably exhausts under the fin (pics I have aren't clear!). Your pic presumably depicts the 707A.

There is also a pic in my book of a Swift with two Vulcans and at least three 707s formating in the background!

Couple survive in the UK and one in Oz I think.

As for location, Airshow (hence barrier) likely to be UK (Vampire and Javelin in background) with good ground support, (info board in front of aircraft), complete guess: But I wonder if Abingdon 1968 fits the bill.

Avro Type 707

Was a third scale low speed model of The 698 Vulcan, the first prototype flew on Sep 4th 1949 but was destroyed during early flight testing.

A second, modified aircraft, the Type 707B first flew on Sep 6th 1950. It appears 5 were built in total.

Thought I remembered one of those in someone's back garden in New South Wales:

"After their use in the Vulcan project, one of the two Avro 707As was provided to the Royal Australian Air Force to conduct aeronautical research. WD280 was transferred from the Royal Air Force in March 1956, and was loaded aboard the brand-new aircraft carrier, HMAS Melbourne, for the voyage to Australia. Arriving in Sydney in May 1956, the 707A was then transferred to HMAS Sydney and shipped to Melbourne to begin test flying at RAAF Base Laverton. Operated by the Aircraft Research and Development Unit (ARDU), WD280 was equipped with recording instrumentation, and was flown in a variety of tests including low-speed airflow separation and handling of the then new delta wing design. The aircraft finished flying with ARDU in 1963, and in 1967 WD280 was sold to Mr Geoffrey Mallett, and was transported to his home in Williamstown where it was a feature of his back garden until being obtained by the RAAF Museum in 1999."
