The article fails to mention the order for two B773 and up to 13 secondhand B744. Boeing will convert about half the B744 to freighters and the rest will be put into the pax fleet.

I've heard that the 747's will replace aircraft currently in the fleet, giving a net increase of only one. Any comments?

Two 777's Purchase
Three 330's Purchase
Three 330's Lease
Delivery 2005-07

No mention of what is happening to the 4 leased 340-300's which expire in '06, or of the 340-600's which seem to be getting a bad rap at the mo (leases expire '07/'08)

The word is that CX have resigned themselves to not getting Roller powered -400's and are now looking at any -400's.

The –400 that get converted to freighters will eventually replace the –200 freighters. The ones that go into the pax fleet will be additional. As for the 340-300 and the –600, who knows? They will need all the aircraft to be able to achieve their expansion plans. Can’t see the –600 going if they are going to make NY none stop a go. Mind you the –600 is going to be scratching it to make NY none stop and make money.

CB,

There is a persistent rumour that the 13 x 744s are replacing current aft. Not true.

Half will be converted directly to 744SF and the other half (with the least hours) will go to the pax fleet. Then.....
the half doz highest time pax 744 will also be converted to 744SF.

(plus the new 744SF from Boeing = 14 more 744s plus the mix of 330/777 as mentioned above......... all-in-all 22 more widebodies aka a 26% increase in the fleet)

This seems huge but as jtr points out if the economy turns down we have the ability to off-load acft with their leases expiring and there is the 747 classic fleet to consider.

Meanwhile as "there is no money in freight" (mis-quote of the century)..... the classics will stay - and may even get a glass/FMC/GPS upgrade.

jtr - ditto, I heard that after extensive searching for RR 744s that GE is now the flavour of the month.... apparently there is 1 or 2 in a desert somewhere?

All the above said........ the only constant is change.

The 'new' 744's will be split 50/50ish between RR and P&W, none will be ex BA as they are too expensive. Not sure if I can say where they are coming from in case it is sensitive info!

Let's take a guess and say SAA and SIA.

Ignore Captain White. For what ever reason he appears to be here and on other threads trying to create a divide between KA & CX pilots. Both companies are excellent companies and there is, and will continue to be, plenty of work for all.

I understand that having decided not to invest in the full cockpit upgrade for the Classics they will be replaced on a one for one basis as the 747-400SF come out of the hangar after the conversion. All rumors to the contrary, such as the Classic staying to 2009, are only disseminated to stop the natives becoming restless. If the Classics were going to be around for much longer, we, (like ANA) would have spent the money for the FULL upgrade, not just the ADI replacement.:(

Facts a bit wrong again Schrod. ADI and HSI not being replaced - FMS with MDCU being fitted. Will show nav plot, EGPWS, TCAS and probably wx radar. Procedures for its use will be similar to current 400 fit. Simulator being modded later this year Oct/Novish and first aircraft at end of year or early in 05. Not the RR fit but a significant investment in the old girls anyway. Yes the Classics are leaving but the time frame is still around the five year mark.

Hmmmmmm........ sorry shorts, but that won't really cut the mustard. The original reason for the upgrade, started by KLM I think, was because the MTBF of the ADIs was getting shorter and shorter.
More and more international airports, of which Dubai is the most strict, insist on the new RNP requirement, which insists on AUTOMATIC external updating of the IRS by GPS and/or navaids. The fit envisaged for the classics is just an fms laid on top of the LTN92. EHGPWS is mandatory soon too, so thats no biggie........wait until TAECO try to marry the (analog) FRATS with the (digital) FMS............
Furthermore, with over half the fleet consisting of some very old ladies indeed, the servicing costs will allow the bean counters like DT to finally lay the queen of the skies to rest, unfortunately a lot sooner than we are all hoping for. Whistling in the dark won't make this monster go away..... :{
