View Full Version : Cheap Flights to Canada
AerBabe 25th Mar 2004, 09:38 My friend is getting married in June and I absolutely must be there to see it! I've tried various internet sites for cheap tickets (Opodo, Expedia, Travelocity, LastMinute, ebookers and Airline Network) but the cheapest I can find around the dates I want is £500... Serves me right for wanting to get to the West of Canada I suppose. :(
Can anyone recommend anywhere else to look for good deals? I'm not worried about the route, but it would help if I could end up in Edmonton!
eal401 25th Mar 2004, 09:45 Have a look at Zoom, www.flyzoom.com
AerBabe 25th Mar 2004, 09:57 eal - thanks very very much. Although they don't have quite the outward flight I want (only one with seats is 3 weeks too early), the return is a great price.
What's the catch? :hmm:
Editted to say I can't book a return flight only. :(
Nor can I take 6 weeks off work. :{
Editted again to say I am a blithering idiot & a return flight only will cost me £180ish.
a is dum 25th Mar 2004, 09:59 You have to get off in Edmonton! :E
Anthony Carn 25th Mar 2004, 10:21 Get off ? .........or get off ?
PS -- You're not blithering, AerBabe !
takenthe5thamendment 25th Mar 2004, 10:43 Try
www.canadian-affair.com
They are advertising very reasonably priced flights.
SpinSpinSugar 25th Mar 2004, 11:00 Canadian Affair are great, I've got a return to Vancouver from the UK for two hundred quid in April.
It's not a West-of-Canada problem Aerbabe, it's a not-many-folks-want-to-go-to-Edmonton problem. Try flying into one of the higher-volume Western centres and you'll get a better fare.
Mebbe hire a car from Calgary? Internal flights aren't cheap, there's a lack of competition problem. Could probably hire a Cessna and fly yourself for less!
Best of luck!
Cheers, SSS
Rollingthunder 25th Mar 2004, 11:10 Couldn't get that canadian-affair site to load properly but if you can get a cheap fight to Vancouver, Vancouver to Edmonton on Westjet runs about GBP30 one way or from Calgary about GBP40 one-way.
Cheapest fare I could find in June was CA$1247.55 return - LHR-YEG-LHR (Air Canada)
AerBabe 25th Mar 2004, 12:08 Thanks for the suggestions. I tried Canadian Affair yesterday for a return flight from London to Calgary, then an internal flight to Ed, but it worked out the same as London, Toronto, Ed with Air Canada.
However, if I go out with Canadian Affair & return with Zoom, I save about £70.
You're not blithering, AerBabe I'm just an idiot? :suspect:
SpinSpinSugar 25th Mar 2004, 12:20 I stand corrected on the internal flight thing, those WestJet prices look very reasonable!
If you're flying with Canadian affair you can go to Calgary or Vancouver for the same price and can mix and match on your in and out leg. Best I can see for June now (5th to 30th) is £368 as they're filling up.
You can WestJet out of one (Van to Edmonton for £30) and into another (Edmonton to Calgary for £50) if you want to do a bit of touristy travel, it's a beautiful part of the world but Edmonton's not terribly pretty (apologies anyone from Edmonton).
Cheers, SSS
AerBabe 25th Mar 2004, 14:19 I WANT to go to Edmonton & I think it's a lovely town. Mind you, one of my best buddies lives there... Unfortunately, I can't really afford either a hotel anywhere else or car hire, so I'll be fairly restricted on this trip. Can't afford the Rocky Mountain Railroad either. :{
Still, there's always West Ed Mall, Whyte Avenue & the river park. :8
takenthe5thamendment 25th Mar 2004, 15:57 AB,
You'd think one of this lot would offer to give you a lift wouldn't you? :D
Rollingthunder 25th Mar 2004, 16:00 Yeah would have but they took away our guest passes a while ago.
Bluejay 25th Mar 2004, 16:02 AerBabe pm me your intended travel details and I will see if I can find anything for you.
Chances are slim but you never know.
Do you by chance work in the airline industry (ie for an agent, BAA, contractor etc)
Rgds Bluejay
Dockjock 25th Mar 2004, 16:04 Try 'The Driving Force' in Leduc (where the airport is) for the car rental. About CA$25 per day. They're in the Royal Hotel.
AerBabe 25th Mar 2004, 16:16 Thanks Bluejay - have PMd you! No, unfortunately I don't work in the industry, although I'd like to.
pigboat 25th Mar 2004, 19:14 Go to Winnipeg and visit Jerricho. He'll give ya a ride the rest of the way. ;)
Didja check AirTransat to Montreal, then WestJet Montreal to Edmonton?
goates 25th Mar 2004, 21:42 Internally Westjet is probably the best bet, but Jetsgo have Loonie sales every Sunday just after midnight. You can sometimes find cheap flights there for a $1. They don't cover Western Canada as well as Westjet and the deals are pretty hit and miss. One way bus tickets from Calgary can be as cheap as $32 and would take you right in to Edmonton, as opposed to the international airport which is outside the city. There are some smaller airlines that will fly into Edmonton's City Centre airport, however I don't know what they charge. Have you looked at Air Transat? They have flights out of Calgary direct to Europe, or at least they usually do in the summer.
You also listed the only reasons to go to Edmonton. West Ed Mall and the river. I don't know that I would include Whyte Ave as something to see though...

AerBabe 26th Mar 2004, 08:00 Thank you all for being so helpful!
AirTransat only seem to have flights to Frankfurt & they're not very cheap. Globespan is better, with a return LGW to Calgary at £400... but once you add on a WestJet return to Ed and back it's more than my three-way option.
Goates - My friend's parents will probably pick me up from the international airport; they did last time. And, although Whyte Ave isn't really a tourist destination, it does have some nice little shops & good restaurants!
goates 29th Mar 2004, 17:10 AerBabe,
Where did you look at the Air Transat flights? If you go to their website they list flights from Calgary to London for $800-$900CAD. They also list flights from London to Calgary, but don't seem to want to give a price.

gooneydog 29th Mar 2004, 17:33 hey Babes Canadian Affair use Zoom Airlines for their flights
Robbs
AerBabe 30th Mar 2004, 06:38 Well, my flights are all booked now, so there's no going back!
Robbs (Robbs???!); you would think they would have come up with the return flight I found independently then, wouldn't you!!
stagger 30th Mar 2004, 09:59 gooneydog
Canadian Affair book MyTravel and Thomas Cook Airlines - not Zoom.
