The new F1 Season

So the new F1 season is on it's way. Didn't actually get to see the race but heard that Schummy has taken the first win of the year. I guess all you Ferrari fans have something to celebrate with thge 1-2 finish. What the hell happened to Kimi??

Anyhow, what i thought I'd throw out there was how do the teams get their cars around to the various races?? Is there a company specifically used to transport the cars? Does each team have their own transport aircraft?? Speaking about team transport, anyone know hat the typical aviation fleet looks like for a F1 team? And while I'm at it, how do you get a job flying for an F1 team??

Cargolux, Atlas, JAL, Alitalia maybe a couple of others. Teams go to FOM who arrange the transport with the various carriers.
Need 6-7 747F per race.

Jordan and Minardi usually fly the teams, including some drivers, out from CVT, with the ITV F1 team usually hitching a lift with Paul Stoddart (top bloke!). Maclaren/Ilmor also ship engines and bits from there out to the test tracks now and again.

So far so good, but any idea what sort of aircraft that they are using to ship the cars, engines and bits? Would they use/need something as big as a 747? And what about the drivers, how are they getting around? Do they all have there own private jets?

The F1 'circus' moves centrally, they have a transport manager, who organises the movement of all teams and equipment. They need several 747 sized aircraft to move their kit. Teams parts/cars are all mixed up, so it is not possible to say that this team moves on this carrier. They normally use scheduled cargo carriers; reliability is the watchword. This only applies to the longhaul stuff, in Europe the teams truck their own stuff to the races.

When I used to work at Heathrow, twice I saw Formula 1 cars being loaded onto the morning Malaysian Airlines B744 service to KUL.

Didnt see which teams they belonged to!

The chaps took care loading them on. I think they were wearing nappies just incase!

Dosent Bernie Eccleston company Formula One Management (FOM) look after the transport? Say this because there was a big flap when the Toyota team was entered and they had to pay for their own transport out to the races. Also there is a picture of the Mclarren MP/4-18 being unloaded from an Antonov in the south of France in the middle of last year, it was painted white with blue lines down the side of the fusilage (sorry about the spelling). All very interesting stuff. sounds like a bit of a mixed bag as to how the cars plus gear get around. I know this is the freight forum, but any ideas about the personel transport ie. how do the drivers and crew get to the races? Do they all fly on a compnay transport? do the drivers have their own planes? Or do they all get onto a company owned RJ, get served juice a cookies and have a sing-a-long as they fly to the next race?

Looking for any leads, hints or advise as I could see myself being quite happy flying for a racing car team.

The head of the Williams F1 team Frank Williams has a Dassult Falcon that he uses to fly to races etc. Also several other team managers and drivers have private jets both the Schumacher brothers have private jets (Michael a Falcon and Ralf a Beachcraft 400 i believe). All the personal just fly out in first (Important people) Business ( less important) and economy (least important). But Minardi's owner Paul Stodard owns european aviation so some may travel with his company.

Also David Coulthard leases a Embracier which is quite nice from the photos that are in F1 Racing magazine. But DC was involved with a plane crash when his Learjet 35 suffered a ehgine failure at FL390 in 2000 just before the Spanish or French Grand Prix.

Can confirm FOM does look after the transport. FOM leases the aircraft in, the teams then buy space/payload from FOM.

Thought I read somewhere that only F1 teams that had not scored any points in the previous season had to pay for all their air transport. The point scoring teams are/were allowed a specified volume/weight FOC. Not sure if this still applies for 2004 - the agreements may have changed?

No points - no transport. That could be interesting. Definately two view points on that rule, should it exist. Regardless, all very interesting and informative news. Got speaking to one guy on a recent course and he said that the money wasn't the greatest in the F1 world of aviation. Any comments?

Belive the top ten scoring teams do not pay for the transport to and from races, guess anyone else has to pay, the concorde agreement lays out all the deatails and payouts per race but its all very secretive and not in the public domain.

Thought Ralf had an Avanti and also believed that Ferrari have one too as they own shares in the manufacturer, could be wrong!

Linstrim, the Lear that crashed (G-MURI) while carrying Coulthard and his girlfriend, and in which both pilots were killed, was owned by David Murray (former chairman of plucky underdogs Rangers FC), not by Coulthard himself. Someone looked down on him that day.

May be wrong but I believe all the teams pay for their transport. However, those teams that have scored points receive money from FOM [think thats correct] towards their travel costs.

I remember when Mark Webber in a Minardi finished 5th at the Australian GP in 2002 and Paul Stoddart said that it would be worth a couple of million dollars to the team for travel the next year.
