Longest runways in Europe?

Can anyone tell me which airport has the longest runway in europe, civil only. I don't know why, but I believe it is Malta. Is this correct and if so how long is it?

09L/27R at Heathrow is 3902m so must be close.

Of all places, Luxembourg has a longer runway than LHR (about 4000m) and may well be one of Europe's longest.

MAD is longer - about 4500 metres, and more than one runway of such length, as well.

If you try a bit of Google research, you’ll find a dozen airports claiming to be the longest in Europe. For instance, on Campbeltown Airport’s official government website (here (http://www.hial.co.uk/campbeltown-airport.html)) it says in the first paragraph “The airport runway, at 3,049 metres, is the longest in Europe.” Given that Madrid Barajas is 4,328 metres, I don’t know how they have the cheek to try this on.

On a completely unrelated note, the UK’s only Primary Transoceanic Abort Landing site for the Space Shuttle is now RAF Fairford as RAF Upper Heyford has been deselected. Heathrow is apparently on the Secondary list.

To be fair to Campbeltown, its website does not claim that the Airport's Runway is the longest in Europe, just one of the longest.

And at 3049 metres, probably adequate for the Loganair DH6 flying the solitary scheduled service!!! ;)

Seeing as Madrid is 4,328m, almost half as long again, and even Heathrow runway 28R is 3,902m, how do you justify your statement?

Believe Paris CDG has 2x 4200m runways one actually 4215m and Frankfurt has 3x 4000m whilst Amsterdams miles away 36L is 3800m. So it's looking like Madrid then is it?

Without looking at the "book", an "Aerodrome" , AFAIK, is a place for "Alighting and Departing of Aeroplanes" and a "Runway" is a "Marked Area" Land or Sea is NOT specified.:D

Sorry but you're mistaken:-

Runway:- "A defined rectangular area on a land aerodrome prepared for the landing and take-off run of aircraft along its length"

Aerodrome:- "Any area of land or water designed, equipped, set apart or commonly used for affording facilities for the landing and departure of aircraft"

I know that Moscow's Ramenskoye Airport has a 5403 meter RWY...maybe it's more military though? That's 35 kms SE of Moscow at a town called Zhukovsky:p
