RT,

I usually don't see movies till they get to the $2 shelves in Blockbuster, so I can't comment myself, but I was taken with a comment by Roger Ebert, my favourite reviewer, in his piece on Monster... (concerning Charlize Theron's role)

This is one of the greatest performances in the history of the cinema.

That made me sit up and take notice!

Having seen none of the nominated performances for best actor, I'm not going to suggest that any of them were unworthy, but what I will say is that if there were five better performances during the year than Jack Nicholson in About Schmidt, it must have been a bumper year. :ugh:

What really winds me up is all the back slapping these people do.

I dont think there is any other "profession" ( I use that term loosely) that awards itself and pats itself on the back so often and so frequently.

Should we give awards, speeches, etc for all aspects of aviation and support teams.

Ie.
Best Landing,

Best Take off.

Best Diagnostic Engineering.

Best ATC

Best Departure

Best Baggage Load

Best Security

We really are in the middle of awards silly season and personally I couldn't give a flying sh*t.

These luvvies work hard fair enough - and they get paid an obscene amount of money for it. What do they need awards for ?

Just for a change, how about some awards for other folk who work just as hard and harder, yet don't get paid very much: nurses, binmen and so on ?

Bit like the UK Honours system.

Gives awards to too many undeserving peeps and ignores too many obviously worthy candidates.

This was confirmed in my mind when Spielberg was ignored for so long, despite a string of superb films.

I couldn't give a flying f*** about them........
My daughter is currently watching the 'red carpet' bit, where all the so called stars will be arriving. There is much in the papers about who will will wearing what, Jimmy Choo's and Manolos, which cost what ordinary families live on for a month.

It is, imho, quite disgusting when there are people starving all over the planet.

Gee, where to start ? I would like to thank Rollingthunder for starting this thread and Binoculars for being the first to reply to it; and also many thanks are due to, in no particular order,
Mrs Carn for having young Anthony so he could contribute;
to Techchick for being so understanding;
now who else is there ? musn't forget IFTB for his rather long winded but invaluable contribution,
and Grainger for his considered opinion,
finally it could not have been done without The Invisible Man.
Thanks a million folks, I will treasure this thread. :p

What bothers me is that New Zealand gets so childishly obssesional about such ridiculously unimportant things.

The America's Cup.
The Rugby World Cup.
The Lord of the Rings.
etc
etc
etc....

"Ooh look, the world is loooooking at us!! (blush blush) we must be so very important! Gosh, hope we don't make fools of ourselves, blither blither..." and so on.

TV is full of it. Radio is full of it. The papers are full of it. We have a cabinet Minister for it, for Christ's sake.

I mean what are we, some pathetic bunch of unmatured tribespeople from some tin-pot village on some remote part of the world as yet untouched by civilisation?
 :yuk: :bored: :hmm:

Good on Peter Jackson and crew.

Henry my dear friend,

My I say how humbled I am at the award. Its taken years of hard work to achieve what I am now. ( toss*r??)

I want to thank my Mum, Dad, brothers and sister, My wife Mrs T.I.M , without whose support, this post could not have been made.

The others in this post deserve a big thank you, because without their thoughts, time and input, I would never have been able to rise to the challenge. ( just got to wipe a little tear from my eye....blub....blub !!!)

I will treasure this day forever, thank you so much, thank you, thank you

( Fashion news.......this morning I'm wearing a red full length dressing gown by M & S, slippers by Tesco, T shirt by Asda's George, and wig by Comb Overs are Us. )
