Hope this isn't a silly question.

Have heard of something called the Professional Pilot Register.

Does it exist?
Is it comprehensive or just something held by a local authority?

Ta.

Yes, brings back some fond memories too!

The PPR was on offshoot of the Job Centre at Gatwick Airport. In the early nineties it was run by Trevor Newton ( Now to be found running the IPA office)

Trevor ran a listing of all pilots currently seeking employment and was in my exerience simply the best at getting his finger on the pulse of any jobs or contracts going. It was always he that would be first to ring me with news of a potential contract, closely followed by PARC who would then employ me, followed by a well known union job finding agency who would ring about two weeks later!

I don't know if it is still running, but it provided a free source of employment news and was a good asset in those days.

Start with the LGW job centre and ask them.
